Actress Daryl Hannah Says She is Blacklisted by Hollywood (Because of her Asperger's)

Actress Daryl Hannah (Kill Bill) claims that at the beginning of her career she was "blacklisted" by Hollywood studios because she suffered from Asperger's Syndrome.

The illness limited social interaction and made it very difficult for her to do film promotions since it required talking to lots of people.

She said: "I never went on talk shows, never went to premieres. Going to the Academy Awards was so painful for me. I'd almost faint just walking down the red carpet. I was so socially awkward and uncomfortable that I eventually got blacklisted."

"Studio executives would call me but I'd be too shy to call them back. So after a while a couple of studios literally told my manager that I was blacklisted."

Despite first starring in films like "Splash," "Roxanne," "Wall Street" and "Steel Magnolias," she eventually had to settle for many straight to video projects.

1. Or it could be that she's not that good of an actress.
:hi:

3. I thought she did a good job in "Blade Runner" as Priss
the "pleasure model" Replicant. :hi:

22. That movie was the high point for more than a few careers.
Rutger Hauer never did a better one and argueably, even Harrison Ford could be said to have done his best work in that movie.

I saw it in a drive in when it first came out. I'm glad it finally got the attention it deserved.

2. Not taking an opinion on it one way or another....
.....but it would be pretty tough to be a succesful actor with Asperger's. You've got to be social all the time in that biz.

7. Yeah, not like a woman overcoming a disability like this and becoming a famous actress

deserves praise or anything. Glad you aren't "picking a side".

4. I feel for her but it seems that she was not able to perform an
essential function of a Hollywood actress: promote one's own film.
I'm glad she was able to find a way to use her talents even though her condition limits social interaction.

8. Exactly what I was thinking..
Maybe it would be cool to be a pro basketball player, but what if you aren't, oh, you know, tall enough, or lack the skills?

Sometimes you just don't have what it takes to succeed in a particular field of endeavor.. you move on and find one where you fit..

5. One of the main reasons, IMO, Jackie O asked young John to break off
their relationship. As I recall he was quite enamored with her.

10. There is a LOT more to this story than meets the eye.
First of all, if she was blacklisted, it was NOT due to her abilities as an actress.

14. Are those her words or the words of the hollywood makers?
I think it wasn't that she was blacklisted as it was more likely that they didn't want to waste their time if she wasn't going to return their calls.

15. Saw her many yrs ago at CA Capitol w. Ed Asner, Mike Farrell, Shelley Fabares
It was a small gathering outside after they had spoken at a hearing involving an environmental issue. Unlike the others, she appeared very shy and uncomfortable, but she was there. Nothing "movie star" or "celeb" about her.

16. Not being able to look people in the eye while talking to them is 1 symptom.
I have that problem, too. Does that mean I have Aspie's? Maybe I do!

17. It's defnitly a good indication.
I find it almost painful to maintain eye contact for any length of time unless I'm very close to the person (relative or close friend).

18. Some PR Person is trying to get a Sympathy "Buzz" out there for her new film...
whatever it is. John Kennedy, Jr. dated her for years...maybe he felt sorry for her for her Asperger's?

Or maybe it's, as I said, a clever PR Ploy to get her sympathy out there for whatever her new project is.

At least that's the way it seems to work for STARS and SPORTS FIGURES out there today. Get Sympathy...folks rush in to see you who have same condition or are so concerned about you they can't wait to see if you can "make it."

Sympathy factor...Ho Hum...

21. Vulgar response
She is a good Democrat, a good citizen, an excellent actress. You claim this story is there to promote a 'new project' and yet you, who just read the story, can not name any such project. See the problem in that?
I'd stand with Hanna and her sisters any day. So there.

25. Shot in the dark here but do you think her being 49 has anything
to do with it? She made some good films in her younger years but a lot of women her age move onto the stage or television.
