Toddlers and Tiaras - anyone watch this?

Just turned it on for a few minutes out of curiosity. WOW.

I've seen street hookers with less makeup.

Didn't really notice the clothes, I was so stuck on looking at the makeup.

They have BABIES in these pageants. Yes, little bitty less than a year old BABIES.

Some of the moms stand in the hall outside the pageant and hold hands and pray that their daughters will win. That was pretty sick.

This is probably one of the most disgusting programs I have ever seen on TV. These parents should be charged with child abuse.

It's like watching tiny golems, moving their bodies like adults, but . . . they're really, really NOT. It's just hideous.

One 3 year old said she loved her outfit because it is "sexy". I about puked.

Before I had kids, there were two little girls who moved in down the street from me who used to love to come over to my house and play when they saw me in my yard. I didn't know their mom well but I really liked these girls. They were probably 6 and 8 years old. One day when they came over, the AVON lady had just left a bag on my door and it had some lipstick samples in it. The girls found it and I told them they could have it. An hour or so later, their mom came over to give it back, because she didn't approve of her girls wearing makeup.

At the time I thought it was strange. I remembered playing dress up as a little girl and loved it. But I wasn't a mom yet so I just politely apologized to the mom. We did eventually become friends and she turned out to be a pretty nice person. And I forgot all about those little lipsticks.

Anyhow, I went on to have only boys so I never had to deal with the makeup on little girls issue. But I was reminded of that tonight while I was watching this disgusting show. It took me a couple decades but I finally get it.

It's fascinating. And I wouldn't have got it at the time, either. But having seen those shows, I do now.

Think of how many industries rely on the objectification of women.

Hair, make-up, fashion, shoes, accessories, razors, perfumes, plastic surgery,... did I mention shoes?

That women, well, little girls and women, are trained to believe that they're incomplete, flawed, less than acceptable, constitutes millions, probably billions in economic activity.

6. It is pretty sick

I was wondering if the men watching were being turned on by these babies parading in their bathing suits but unfortunately all of them (I saw) wore loose shirts.....untucked. I hope they weren't aroused.

I watched for less than 5 minutes before turning the channel.

My own daughter was gorgeous at that age but I would have never, EVER thought to turn her childhood into winning awards and parading in such a sexual fashion.

With one exception the moms are hideous. I found myself wondering if they put all their energy into beautifying their daughters and let themselves go.

8. Eons ago, my friend was in a pageant

for "Princess Anna," the little girl version of "Queen Citriana" for the local Citrus Fiesta. My mom didn't want to go, but I begged her. All it was was a bunch of 6 & 7 year old girls in party dresses, curly hair, & a bit of makeup (because you do look sick on stage without it). They walked up & down the pageant stage & waved to the audience, sang a song, then answered some questions. Basically what they were looking for was a cute little girl who could wave nicely & not fall flat on her face. :) The really *big* deal, though, was meeting "Queen Citriana." Every little girl present got to meet her. It was cool & my friend & I had bragging rights about it at school the next Monday. :)

I don't recall much more than that, but it definitely was not the travesty these Toddler & Tiara pageants are.

17. My sisters and I were in a fashion show for a local dept store

I loved it because we got to keep our dresses. I don't remember wearing makeup though.

so they all had a little blush, a little lipstick, mascara, & some blue eyeshadow (it was the early 70's after all lol ). They definitely were not made up to look like junior hookers, like those in kiddie pageants are.

19. Well hell, I modeled as a teen

But I was a TEENAGER and I was never "made-up" to look like a hooker thank gawd.
In fact, we did our own makeup which was for everyday so we did not have the appearance of
street walkers.

It was as a member of a "teen board" for a major dept store and we also did charity work assisting
people out of work with assembling wardrobes, entertaining people in nursing homes and things of
that nature.

I did receive a discount on clothing I purchased from the store but unfortunately did not get to keep the clothes I modeled.
Then again, sometimes I had to wear things far too large for me (I am teeny or WAS), so it would have
been useless to keep the stuff.

21. I do think it's changed tremendously.

It's one thing to have a little cover under bright stage lights, and quite another to look like these . . . diminutive trollops. Ugh. But I remember those shows you talk about. Yes, a nice dress and hair ribbons and a wave - that's it. They'd say hello into the mic. People would laugh. It was cute. These things today are a freak show.

14. My wife and I took an ethics class together which had debates.

One of the debates she was assigned to was defending that show and baby glitz pageants in general. Neither of us knew what a baby glitz pageant was before that assignment. Fun debate.
