Prince: "The Internet's completely over”
Prince: The Internet is dead
The music industry might be embracing digital and online technology, but Prince is not convinced that it’s a good thing.

"The Internet's completely over,” Prince told British tabloid publication, The Mirror, in his first newspaper interview in 10 years. “I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won't pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can't get it.”

Prince is currently set to release his latest album, “20Ten,” for free through various European print media, including the Daily Mirror and its Scottish affiliate, the Daily Record. Fans can snag their copy this Saturday via the different press outlets, but you they certainly won’t find any of the new material online.

Prince has banned both YouTube and iTunes from using his music, calling the web obsolete.

“The Internet's like MTV,” he told the mirror. “At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can't be good for you."

38. I bought 1 song from iTunes a year ago (on my old computer)
That computer died, but I had an archived copy of the song. iTunes wouldn't let me play it.
The control freaks at Apple can go to hell as far as I'm concerned. I'm all mp3 now.

Edited on Tue Jul-06-10 02:59 PM by asdjrocky
He had his own guys come in advance and make sure nothing on my board had rec/out cables connected and then during the party he kept having CD's brought up to me to play. I heard some amazing Price music that night that unless you were there, you will never hear and I have to say, that's pretty amazing.

One of the few in his entourage that would speak to me told me that he had a vault full of stuff that was "just for him and his friends."

Absolutely amazing talent and performer.

Also saw him on the Purple Rain tour, the man can play a harp. A fucking harp.

10. One thing for sure
All these computers and digital gadgets in the sense that he is talking, are a mess.

If you use I-Pod, you have to use I-Tunes to get your music. If you use the Amazon Kindel, you have to buy books from Amazon ONLY. You can not use Rhapsody or Barns and Noble without breaking the law and cracking the protection code each places on their downloads.

It really sucks for those who are either uninformed or do not have the necessary computer skills to figure these things out.

14. You can use your own CDs with an iPod
You have to use iTunes in the sense of using the iTunes software, but you don't have to BUY your music through iTunes to put it on an iPod. iTunes will happily rip your own CDs for you, and also put MP3s you've bought at Amazon, or acquired any other way, onto your iPod as well.

I personally like the iTunes music store, but it's far from my only source for music, and all of my music is on my iPod and streamed through my house wherever I want to play it too.

21. you don't actually use i-tunes do you?
If you do, you aren't getting as much out of it as you can. You can rip cds, or obtain music from other sources etc. For example, just this morning, I received a free mp3 download from amazon and when I downloaded it, it went directly into my itunes library, just as if I'd bought it from the itunes store.

42. I can understand the protection for the artist
And I realize that those who steal art have caused this for all of us.

It is the companies like Barns & Noble, Amazon and Borders who are forcing you to buy their reader to read the same book purchased there.

It is like if I choose one, I am locked into buying only from them. Say, I buy a Kindle and then I am given a gift card for Barns & Noble for $10. You can buy an ebook for $10 but you have to have a Nook or you can only read it on you PC.

What really pisses you off is they have a sample of the ebook you can download and when you test that on your reader, it works. But once you purchase it, bam.

Here is the really scary part; the security key they have put in the file you just purchased contains your name and credit card number. No one asked me if they could hide that in a file.

Or buy their licensed products alone.

11. Prince is clueless. Hell, the bands that let people listen to their music free on You Tube
and elsewhere without pulling the plug are the ones that are HUGE hits and draw in the record crowds at concerts which is where the real money is.

I'm no fan of Justin Bieber but that kid became an overnight sensation because of You Tube.

Prince must have sung "Let's go crazy" a few times too many.

20. iTunes is crap but the internet is just fine.
Net music will be fine as long as we don't let any company dominate and screw it up. iTunes is trying pretty hard. I keep getting offers for "free" songs on iTunes. I don't bother. I have no interest in a restrictive program that won't let me transfer music the way I want. iTunes is designed for the record industry, not the consumer or artist.

46. Are you talking about DRM (digital rights management)?
Music from iTunes hasn't had DRM for a while now. You can transfer it anywhere you want. What kind of transfer do you want to do that you don't think you can do?

Video front iTunes is another matter... that's still stuck in DRM hell.

48. It's .m4a
.m4p is the extension for DRMed .m4a, both of which are basically AAC in a QuickTime wrapper.

Plenty of non-Apple hardware will play .m4a these days, and while there may not be the huge profusion of tagging utilities for that format as exist for MP3, you can certainly tag .m4a in iTunes however you like. Your music won't be stuck with whatever tagging it downloads with, if that's what you're thinking, or with whatever automatically downloaded from CDDB for your ripped CDs.

I'm pretty fussy about tagging myself, and iTunes is very flexible about tagging now, including all kinds of sorting tag options if you take the trouble to use them. There's probably non-iTunes software to edit .m4a tagging too, but since I get by pretty well with iTunes, I haven't made a point of finding other options.

He was hooked up by Prince's drummer who lives here in St Pete. Keeping my fingers crossed for friend, he's a recent college grad, needs the job, and is a bad-ass bassist. I've heard the drummer play locally too - he's also fantastic. Prince and his touring band could be one hell of a show.
