Zsa Zsa Gabor in Critical Condition

Zsa Zsa Gabor is in critical condition after undergoing hip replacement surgery earlier this week ... this according to her publicist.

93-year-old Gabor broke her hip on Saturday -- after falling out of bed in an attempt to answer the phone at her Bel-Air home.

Gabor's publicist tells TMZ that Zsa Zsa's eyes are open, but she's not talking. We're told doctors are concerned that Zsa Zsa may have suffered a stroke.

1. Hollywood and the celeb world have really taken some hits this year.
Zsa Zsa and her sisters were the rage when I was a kid. I wish her well but 93 years of age is a good long run. Too bad.

2. Broken hip at 93 is a very very serious injury.

3. Why is that? I've heard that many times before, but I never hear why.
Is it having to undergo surgery?

I send my sympathy to ZaZa and I truely hope she doesn't suffer, but I'd like to know why a broken hip usually spells death in old people. I swear I've heard of some other old people undergoing surgeries and recovered.

4. I can't say as I am not a physician. Many years ago when I worked in healthcare
I saw this kind of thing over and over. Some suppositions can be made w/regard to problems with pain, blood pressure, the type of injury and of course the later major surgery. But I agree it is a quandry why this particular injury is so catastrophic. I suppose some may be attributed to the time between the injury and later treatment but I do not know the average length of time between discovery and treatment correlated with deaths. Plus some of the medications that patients are placed on may also impact later health outcomes.

When the body is old, the body is old. Even for those who survive the fall, surgery and PT, the recovery is very slow and often results in limited mobility.

6. Even the medical world seems stumped by that problem.
This article is longer than you need but it does get into deaths after hip breaks.

8. In my mom's case (she was 86), her broken hip caused blood clots,
one of which went to her heart and killed her. Even though they give anti-coagulants, it doesn't get rid of all the clots. And, of course, the clots are unavoidable in the healing process.

5. My first thought was "What is she? A hundred?"
I hope she gets better. She cracks me up.

7. I heard the other day that she was 92-93 or so. Sad part is,
aparently she was doing just fine until, while she was laying in be watching TV, the phone rang. When she reached for the phone she fell out of bed and broke her hip.

I don't know exactly what "doing fine" at that age means, but apparently she didn't have any BIG problems. I feel bad for her.
