Bravura performances by Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland. And twisted plots that kept your emotions on a roller-coaster. Emotionally, it was exhausting.

11. Two and I can't make up my mind about

The Haunting of Hill House". The original black and white one with Russ Tamblyn. It had no visible monsters, nothing, but it was really scary because it left the "monster" up to your imagination. And the George Scott movie "The Changeling" now that was also one that gave you goosebumps and you never saw a monster or ghost.

In both movies you were kept on the edge of your seat expecting a "monster" to jump out. They are really so much better than the slasher type movie.

"The Haunting of Hill House" terrified me as a child, and I loved every minute of it.

I don't know that I've ever watched "The Changeling." I may have to put that in my Netflix queue. The only time I can eke out to watch a movie in its entirety is when I'm hooked up to an apheresis machine donating platelets; maybe during the daytime in a room full of donors and RNs I can handle it. My nerves aren't what they used to be!

13. I agree about Halloween

I saw it at an afternoon sneak peek. I knew it was playing but the woman sitting next to me thought she was there to see the movie Halloween was replacing....some small comedy type movie I can't remember the name to. It only added to the fun watching and listening to her.

Very different, but I also really like The 9th Gate - with Johnny Depp. It's very European and moody but I find it interesting every time I see it - again, I'm waiting for it to be on TV.

17. It Had To Be The Original Movie - Invasion Of The Body Snatchers.......

the 1956 version starring Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter. I was 8 years old when I saw it and I didn't sleep for the next two nights.

I recommend it if you can catch it somewhere on the cable or rent.

Excellent movie - better than any of the remakes.

19. The Thing (1982)

It has everything you could want in a horror flick. Great acting and dialog, great atmosphere, great music, and lots of gooey special FX by Rob Bottin.

Why bother. There is nothing they can ever do to top the "spider head" scene. That was one of the most intense movie moments ever.

35. It's actually a prequel, and tells the story of the Norwegian camp.

Of course, we know how that ends, so I'm not sure I get the point of this whole thing. They do explain the things the American team found in the '82 version when they went to the Norwegian camp. Comes out in April of next year, so I guess we'll see. :)

42. I liked how they preempted audience reaction

by putting it into a character's mouth. The scene was so over-the-top crazy it could've elicited guffaws as readily as shrieks.

So instead I'll list my two favorite scary movies from the past decade:

1) Frailty
2) Descent

Frailty was Bill Paxton's directorial debut and I hope he does another horror flick as it was sublime. Some of the best build up of tension I've ever experienced in a film.

Descent was just as good, but a lot more gory. The film proves how scary men in rubber suits can be. It pays homage to a number of classic horror films including Alien and Carrie. I don't scare easily and this movie jolted me a number of times.

As far as classics go, The Exorcist is always awesome and hold up incredibly well. The original Wicker Man and Rosemary's Baby are some of my other faves.

...Frankenstien. Of course I was seven years old, lived in Nome, Alaska, ran out of the theater about two thirds of the way through, and slept at the foot of my parents bed for a week. Being scared as a child can be traumatic. Much different than appreciating a scary movie as an adult, The Excorcist did bother me for awhile. Thanks.

41. Wait Until Dark...with Audrey Hepburn 1967

I was 13 when I saw my first really scary movie. It was showing at the local theater(hometown pop 700).
This is my choice since, at the age of 57, I still recall the suspense as a blind Hepburn realizes she is not alone in her apartment. Someone is there searching for a heroin stuffed doll.
The only part I vividly recall today is Hepburn smashing the light bulbs to darken the place and finally realizing the location of the one she missed.

Outstanding actress, scary & suspense on the edge story.
