Live Action Movie Review - The Road

Story: In a post-apocalyptic future, a family tries to survive cold weather, starvation, cannibals, and persistent suicidal urges.

Acting: Excellent.

Humor: No intentional humor.

Violence: Although The Road is significantly less graphic than most cannibal movies, the emotions around the violence add to the intensity.

Sex: None.

Overall: The Road is a really well made movie, but it is not for everyone. I would only suggest this to fans of bleak, fucked up movies, or Viggo Mortensen.

Excellent film. Not for everybody. Sticks in the bones like a bad chill. Viggo, A++. Same for the boy.

6. I liked it but thought the ending was convenient.

I had a much, much darker ending in mind, and while it would have been bleak it also would have packed a punch. The ending as is left me flat, but the movie as a whole was excellent.

I liked how the solution to the boy's problems in the end of the movie turned out to be one of his family's main problems. They were the reason the father was so paranoid and constantly on the run, even from the bomb shelter.

8. From what I understand, Cormac McCarthy had written it with

a much darker ending, but the editors and publisher insisted he change it. They thought it was TOO bleak, TOO full of despair. So, the ending IS more or less 'tacked on.' I agree that it would have been more powerful if they'd left it as he intended it.

there is nothing particularly powerful about absolute hopelessness.

A touch of hope is one of the things that makes us fundamentally human.

I think at the end of the day, that touch of hope at the end was only temporary. That little family could be raped and murdered ten minutes later off screen, or die a year later as the last of the food is eaten. But, for just a little while...
