Fans are trying to save their ABC soaps.

There are a lot of posts at this message board regarding ways to contact sponsors. There is also going to be a protest in NYC and LA on April 26.

Soap fans are even taking credit for a 13% drop in ratings for Dancing with the Stars. (Although IMO, DWTS is just boring this year!)

I have been an AMC fan for 30+ years. I hope they succeed but realistically, I doubt that it will save the shows.

1. Same thing happened to Guiding Light
I was a lifelong viewer. There were several online forums that tried to save it and a few petitions as well. But alas, it went off the air.

7. I had pretty much given it up but then started again when I heard they were going off the air

The end was interesting. They tied up all the loose ends, couples finally got together, etc.

9. I never watched that at all but was still kind of sad to see it go
Anything that runs close to sixteen thousand episodes is a staggering piece of work.

2. Meh, I kind of feel bad for the long-time fans, but the shows simply suck.
All of them. It's time to move on.

3. Ooh, I can remember watching AMC back when
Erica was trying to bed Nick - the first time. :) My grandmother would doze off. When she woke up, she'd want me to tell her what she missed. If you so much as made a reach to turn the dial, somehow she'd wake up and catch you.

4. I remember when Erica got with her agent, Jason Maxwell.
She was married to Jeff at the time. She got pregnant and had an abortion - the first of many abortions. I think this was the summer of 1971 or 72.

8. I wonder how many husbands has Erica had?
I know she was married to some of them more than once. That includes Nick best I remember.

Sheesh, what a life!

Sorry to see AMC go personally - watched it since I was a teenager myself.

5. I don't watch, but it seems absolutely clueless to cancel these
multiple decades old running soaps for the crap they want to replace it with. From what I can tell, they still get new viewers and some level of youth audience from the college age cohort. Yet, they want to replace it with reality crap that is already saturated as a medium.

Stupid. Really damned stupid. Pretty soon, there will be no creative tv broadcast--at least none that involves actual script writing and story lines.

10. Soaps are very expensive- viewership down to only 125,000 in 18 to 36 group
I read that AMC's viewership in the 18 to 36 group dropped from over 2 million to only about 125,000 over the past couple of decades and the shows are much more expensive than reality/consumer shows. But it would seem to me that those older than 36 who make up most of the loyal viewers have more disposable income to spend than younger viewers just starting out.

Not that I'll watch them anyways.

12. I've never been into soaps but still find it sad
I remember going to my grandma's house and having so much fun playing games and baking with her. But come 3 o'clock (or whatever the time), I had to sit there while she watched Guiding Light. I was always so confused and thought that my mom would never let me watch this! There was another one she watched when I was very young -- Edge of Night?

My other grandma watched a different soap opera. Once I was out of high school, she would always talk about the characters and ask me if I watched.

Just seems like one more thing from my childhood gone.
