does anyone buy music anymore?
I'm beginning to think no one buys cds (that's understandable) or even downloads music anymore. I'm thinking that no one wants to pay for music.
what do you think?

2. I, basically, only listen to live music...
Fortunately, I live in a small town that is over-flowing with great musicians. We have many clubs, restaurants, and bars that support live music and we get together at one another's houses to play during the week.

I do, however, listen to old blues and R&R records and CDs to learn new/old licks.

5. I do
I think that the music should be paid for because the musicians put time and effort into writing and/or performing the songs so they should be paid for said efforts.

26. You're welcome
I grew up around a musical dad and have been at least peripherally involved in the music scene for many years so I can empathize with musicians. I mean nearly everybody loves music and not many of us have the talent and/or patience to perform, so those who do should be rewarded for their efforts.

7. I rarely buy a cd, but buy a lot of stuff off of iTunes.
I love the fact that I don't have to buy an entire CD for one or two good songs.

8. I don't, but I pretty much only listen to music in the car on old cds that I made years ago.
I haven't heard any music lately that I would pay good money to own.

11. People pay tons for music.
Last year, the top 50 live acts grossed 2.93 Billion dollars in ticket sales. So people pay up for music, and pay high dollar. What is being rejected is the delivery methods, the companies that control that, the devices they want people to use, and so forth. Music itself is doing fine.

12. Not since I got satelite radio
Certainly I pay for the music every month, but because I have a dock in my house, a unit in my car, and a portable boom box, I can't think of an occasion I would play a CD anymore.

I must admit though, the bitrate has been degraded so much on Sirius that when I do listen to a disc in my car, I'm shocked at how much I'm missing. Still, I can hardly think of an artist anymore that I would want to hear an entire album from.

My music format now is something old, something new, something borrowed, and a lot of blues.

13. Rarely CD's.... but usually download the equivalent of 1 CD each month
Sometimes only a single song... sometimes the full "album"...

I miss old time music (record, cd, dvd) stores... But, I do like being able to preview, search, and purchase only a single track if that is all I want.

Then again, I am unlikely to ever spend the kind of money some do for a music system that would made me crazy if I did not have all my favorites on "vinyl" or all downloads in a "lossless" format.

16. I buy music from friends.
Some of it online, or a CD at a show.
I give and or get iTunes gift cards once in a while.
I'll get a CD or two from Amazon a couple of times a year.
But I certainly haven't gone to a "record store" and thumbed through racks of records or CDs in forever.
And most of the music I listen to is streaming for free, or in my iTunes library.

17. I buy them used.
Like most of the books I buy.

I can browse the collection and see something I haven't heard in awhile. Play lists just don't hold my interest the same way.

20. We give our CD's out free at our shows
usually remastered live performances, fans love to hear a show we played a month ago. I just throw a stack of them on the front of the stage during set break, they're usually gone before i make it to the bar.

21. I buy from bands that self-produce their cds.
If they play a good bar set, I'll drop down the $10 for a cd. I hear better stuff from local bar bands playing original music than I do from the corporate crap thats flooded the radio since the 90s.

24. I buy some
from artists I really like. I've downloaded quite a bit for free, but if I really like it, I buy it.

I refuse to buy from iTunes, however. I don't like the m4p format. I prefer mp3, so I buy from Amazon, or I get CDs and rip them myself.

32. I have two choices, download it or not hear it at all.
As a music junkie there's no way I can support this habit on my fixed income, so yes, I download a lot of things. Most of the music I listen to is pretty obscure. Some of the bands don't like downloading but many of them either don't care at all (some even encourage it), or just accept it and make money in other ways. The band the Melvins know they won't make much on a regular CD, but they do know that music fans are collectors, so each of their CDs are now hand packaged and printed, making it more of a collector's item. Most of the bands consider CDs a wash and rely more on merch sales at shows these days (which I always get when I see shows, and I see a lot...it's the only time I buy new shirts lol, and one band even sold flasks! I don't even drink but I couldn't pass up a Khanate flask!).

I could stop downloading music, but then I'd never be able to tell anyone about this cool band I heard, there would be no word of mouth (most of my friends are into music as much, if not more, than I am, and word of mouth is crucial), and band's would get even less attention. I have thousands of CDs, hundreds of cassettes, and have thrown or given away hundreds of LPs. I've spent more money on music than any other item in my life, and if I could still do so I would. I don't have that option anymore. So I can either listen to a band and try to get others into them, or ignore them and never tell anyone about them. Kind of a trade off for some bands to consider. If it was mainstream music than people would hear about it anyways, but how many people have heard of Deathspell Omega or Brighter Death Now? These kind of bands need word of mouth, and that's all I can afford to give them.

34. Whatever you're into it's out there.
Pick a genre and there's someone in that field doing something worthwhile (well, maybe not the straight pop genre lol). You got to dig for it though, and it can be tough to locate obscure stuff offline (no store within an hour of me carries 90% of what I get into, for instance). I'm 43, I've been heavily into music since I started buying records at age 6, and to me there's never been a better time to be a music fan. There's so much out there, so readily available, and so free from genre dogmas that I feel like I'm in music heaven.
