BoA (Kwon) to make Hollywood debut

Japan-based Korean pop star BoA, 24, is to make her Hollywood debut in a forthcoming movie directed by Duane Adler. BoA, who will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of her Japanese debut on May 31, is believed to have been spotted by Adler while performing in LA, after which she was contacted and offered the role, sources at her management agency said.

The movie, titled “Cobu 3D,” is scheduled for release in early 2012. BoA will be starring opposite “Dancing With the Stars” winner Derek
Hough, 26, in an interracial love story about rival underground dance clubs in New York. BoA and Hough will play two star-crossed dancers whose forbidden love is threatened by the rivalry between their families. Director Adler is best known as the writer of dance movies “Step Up” and “Save the Last Dance.”

BTW, BoA isn't so much a stage name, as a slightly altered anglicization of her name, which is actually Bo-A, not Bo-Ah. If you read her name in Hangul, you can see there is no H anywhere in the spelling). :)

"Beat of Angel" is only one slogan that her Korean record label created from her name; others are "Best of Asia" and "Bring on America". I'm REALLY glad they dropped that one pretty quickly, as it was just too arrogant for words, esp. when her label did zilch to promote her first U.S. album!

That Japanese news agency got a big fact wrong--she's not based in Japan. She's based in Korea, and just lives in Japan while she's working there. She also lived in Los Angeles when her first English-language album came out. She was back here recently, and I *think* some filming of COBU 3D is taking place in Canada.

I hope the movie does well, for she's a kick-ass dancer and deserves success in the West. She can actually dance and sing live onstage at the same time, unlike *cough* Britney *cough*.
