4. True that. Movies are rarely better than the source material.
Stephen King being a good example of good book to bad movie ratio.

7. My Swedish is a little rusty....
...however, I do somehow connect the heroic actions of Lisbeth Salander with those of Elizabeth Warren. Does that count for anything?

8. They're subtitled and dubbed - you chose.
Having watched the first film with the subtitles I then decided to watch it again after I bought the second film. I tried it 2nd time with the dubbed soundtrack. I gave up laughing after about 5 minutes and went back to the subtitles- its pants with American accents.

I was going to suggest Danish series "The Killing" too but I see that's now been remade over your side. Next up I suppose they'll remake the French series "Spiral".

11. Be careful with our European series
They may only be available on Region 2 / PAL. If so you may well experience difficulty playing them over your side. Reverse is ok for me here - multi-region DVD players and our tv's will cope your region and with NTSC too. Sony and the EU did together and ban multi-region players - you just need to know where to get them re-programmed. :)

In the '60s we reckoned NTSC was an acronym for Never Twice the Same Colour. Is it still like that ?

btw - check this out too which I posted a week ago : http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=210x43765

14. I order DVDs from the UK all the time
At first, I watched them on my Mac. You can do that as long as you watch ONLY Region 2 DVDs on it, because it can reset the region code only five times, and then it "freezes" in whatever code you used last.

Later, I bought a region-free player from an outfit in Illinois. It cost about $20 more than a regular player, and I use it a lot for both European and Japanese DVDs.

I HATE the way Hollywood remakes foreign TV shoes for American audiences. It's part of the dumbing down of American entertainment.

Before the 1970s, our networks used to show TV shows direct from the UK, and some of them, like The Avengers, were wildly popular. After Norman Lear remade Till Death Do Us Part as All in the Family, the remaking frenzy started.

The U.S. remake of Life on Mars was lame, even when they shot the scripts almost verbatim. Because it was U.S. TV, Harvey Keitel could not be as amusingly raunchy as Philip Glenister.

Only PBS shows British television as-is, but the selection is sometimes odd. Our local PBS station shows old episodes of Eastenders, for heaven's sake.

16. What you mentioned
concerning region reset 5 times only also applies to WMP - was so years ago but having no cause to use it these days I'm not sure what the current situation is.

Years ago when they completely re-shot a Dutch version of Eastenders in Holland the railway was replaced by a canal and there were no cars - only bicycles. :)

10. I so totally agree!
The Swedish movies were fantastic. Not 100% true to the books but really good versions.

I don't look forward to a Hollywood version.

5. I just cannot believe
that Hollywood has any notion of matching the quality of the original film and to make natters worse they'll probably then decide to do the other two films in the Millenium Trilogy too. :(

Tossers.

15. The Swedish films
are available in the U.S. on DVD, and they are excellent. As far as making your player region-free (and a lot of other very helpful information), look to this site for some tips.

18. Looks decent.
I'm still skeptical though. To remake near perfection....someone's got some balls.

is you really don't need subtitles. Excellent triology.
