"Dark Skies" a surprisingly good find from the local library... (x-posted to TV Chat)

It only lasted 1 season (1996-97). It's basically X-Files in the 60's. It's surprisingly good.

Bobby Kennedy: Alien hunter

Howard Hughes: Driven mad by aliens

Jack Ruby: Possessed by an alien host

J. Edgar Hoover: Blackmailed by aliens

Allen Foster Dulles: Alien ally

LBJ: Has alien advisers

Hubert Humphrey: Thwarted by aliens

The show is smart, they did their homework, it's a woo fan's wet dream. Where it falls down is that there is just no charisma. They good guys are nice, the bad guys are bad, but there is no one that you love to love or love to hate. X-Files had Mulder and Scully and Cancer Man. The stars in Dark Skies are competent, but they had no one who can grab and hold the screen.

But it was still a fascinating season, and they had it scripted out to season 5 (which would have taken the show to 9/11).

I found it at my local library (that most Socialist of institutions), if you can get it free or cheap, I most highly recommend it.

and neither one of them carries it, alas. Nor my public library, sigh.

3. I just checked Amazon, $16. Honestly, I wouldn't pay that much, but does your library do ILL?...

(Inter-Library Loans) A lot of library's participate in this, it's a way to get materiel that your local lib doesn't have. Some libraries ship free, others make you pay a few dollars shipping cost. It's worth checking out.

I will have to go talk to them about it.

I have gotten very savvy at using the on-line aspect of my library: I reserve books, renew books, suggest books they can order, have them bring books from some other branch to the one nearest me. I have never quite figured out their connection to other libraries to put in a request for inter library loan. I'm sure if I ask, they'll tell me about it.

I don't want to spend $16.00 on something I can possibly check out for free.

I do feel slightly guilty that I no longer purchase as many books as I used to, but I can't afford it these days, and I'm highly grateful for the libraries. As it is, there are far too many books out there that I want to read that I know I won't have time for.
