What's your most hated Movie Meme?
Okay, I've got mine: I call it the "Fast Forward Future Syndrome," wherein a movie is set in the near future, and the world is vastly advanced. Hey, I loved Blade Runner, but "attack ships on the shoals of Orion" in 2019? The film came out in 1982: It was set just 37 years in the future, but the technology more properly belonged 370 years hence.

There are worse examples, like Demolition Man, set in 2032 and referring to the 1990s as ancient times! Minority Report was set in 2054: Do you really think we'll have that kind of tech in 43 years? Didn't think so.

Well, that's mine. What's yours?

1. Voiceover narration
especially of the nostalgic "Wonder Years" variety.

I let it slide in Blade Runner, but there's a director's cut that doesn't have it and it doesn't take anything away from the story.

2. Mine? "Dumb Woman needs Big Manly Menz to Rescue Her"
You know, we can all get into difficulties and need rescuing, but damn, the only movie victims who should be helpless, crying, and totally unable to act in an adult manner are CHILDREN.

8. Nay! Those are the best!
Especially women from the '50s movies wearing beehive hairdos and high heels, trying to run away from the swamp creature without breaking a nail.

3. I dont know if its a meme or not...

But it's the "super crazy gee whiz action to the nth degree".

The kind where 4 billion bad guys are either shooting/ chasing etc the "good guy" and ALL seem to miss. Of course the good guy is dead on.

The action movies where there is NO WAY - physics wise - that anything even CLOSE to the scene could happen.

Not to mention the pace of said movies. Ironically, for me instead of being exciting they are incredibly BORING.

That or the kind where they HAVE to kill of one of the "nice" guys/gals so the hero has an excuse to go off on the "bad guys". UGHHH.

16. I'll second that.
And I'll add the good guy getting beaten and shot multiple times yet manages to live through it, while just one bullet kills the bad guy.

and surveillance. The only real difference is the state uses computers instead of Precogs to identify suspects. The police state future of 1984 is old-fashioned by comparison to server farms and algorithms.

No. The future is here and it sucks. But, I'm still waiting for my atomic flying car.

5. Teenager switches bodies with mom/dad.
Tom Hanks' BIG was the only film I can recall in which the age-shift thing worked. Although I admit, I haven't seen many of the others because the genre tends to be aimed at kids -- and bores me to no end.

6. Drunken Southerners get together
and showcase how eccentric, yet kind-hearted and wise they truly are, all with horrible fake accents and courtly manners and fashion from the 19th century. There's usually a confrontation with a redneck in which one of the genteel white characters gets to defend his/her black friend. This is a new twist on the Old South meme that the plantation days were a golden age in which people followed a code of honor, treating their slaves well and punishing the wicked rednecks with swift vengeance. Unfortunately, this meme has been historically promoted by those in the North as much as in the South.

7. People prior to the Reagan Administration believed that America would continue
to innovate, invent, and create. They had an optimistic vision of the future and believed we were destined for greater things. They didn't really think that we would go nowhere and let our infrastructure fall apart.

You mention 2 movies that were based on works by Philip K. Dick. His vision of the future will be eerily correct. It just won't happen as quickly as he believed.

12. Stormtrooper effect
The stormtrooper effect, also called stormtrooper syndrome, is an expression used to describe the cliché phenomenon in works of fiction of minor cannon fodder characters being completely ineffective in combat against characters important to the plot.

18. First one that comes to mind, people treating a minor competition like a life or death situation.
Edited on Thu Nov-17-11 05:16 PM by hughee99
Be it the all valley karate tournament, the big step dancing competition, the pee-wee hockey finals, or the downhill ski race, I'm just sick of seeing movies try to build up a ton of drama to an even whose true result would be, in reality, completely inconsequential.

That doesn't mean the movies are always necessarily bad, but what really happens if Daniel-san loses in the finals of the all valley championship? He's still living in a town with a bunch of assholes, why would one think any deal they made would really matter? Who really cares if the Mighty Ducks, or the Bad-News Bears win or not, if Lane Meyer beats Roy Stalin down the K-12 or if the Beavers beat the Dragons even when Michael J. Fox doesn't turn into the wolf.

I like sports movies, I'd just like to see SOME creativity in the plot once in a while.
