Looking for freelance copyediting/proofreading work (DC)
I'm a professional copyeditor/proofreader who is just starting out in this great city of Washington, DC. I have a full-time job but am looking to do just a little bit of extra work on the side (10-15 hours/week). I am proficient in Associated Press and Government Printing Office styles, and can edit to your house style as well. All work will be submitted online in a format you choose. Ideal for bloggers who would like a read-through on posts for grammar mistakes, but I can also do a more in-depth copyedit to make sure your arguments are sound and your line of speech convincing.

JOB EXPERIENCE:

- Currently working at Vanguard Communications, a public relations firm dedicated to pursuing social change through communications, as a production coordinator. I joined in February 2004 as a proofreader.

- Taught English as a foreign language in Japan at Ekimae Nova, one of the country's most famous language schools. I taught ages 3 to 81 in levels from beginning to advanced, and coordinated special language and culture events. My specialty was (and still is) explaining grammar points in a clear, concise manner. Additionally, I served as a liaison between Japanese-speaking staff and English-speaking teachers.

- Worked as an editorial assistant at Teen Ink Magazine, a monthly magazine that is 100 percent written by junior high and high school students across the country and around the world. I participated in the selection, editing, layout, and proofreading of nonfiction articles, short stories, poetry, movie and book reviews, and art and photography submitted by teenagers.

EDUCATION:

- Graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Boston University's College of Arts and Sciences in May 2002. I received a B.A. with a major concentration in English and a minor in Japanese Language and Literature.

- Currently pursuing a certificate in Editorial Practices from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's graduate school.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS:

- Typing: 95+ wpm.
- Fluent in Japanese.
- Limited HTML skills.

SUGGESTED RATE:

- $20/hour (open to negotiations).
