3. I know, I know...
I know! I almost hate myself for making a pro military design. I'm a world-without-borders kind of pacifist. But the Capt. Phillips story just grabbed me for a minute. Mea culpa.

6. I understand. Just don't let them use this single incident to justify real acts of war ....
and try to make it appear that the central mission of the U.S. military is to free hostages, fight terrorism and export "democracy" to other nations.

5. It is unfair to lump these 'law and order' issues ....
with legitimate concerns about imperial overreach ....

THIS time: It was justified ....

Piracy is an age old crime of which VERY few people disagree is a legitimate cause for military action ....

Unless, of course, you are a perfectionist (See DU or FR) ...

Let's not muddy the waters .... Rescuing pirated ships and crews is NOT an expression of imperial ambition, so let's not confute the two ....

7. It's a very slippery sloop and short step from one to the other.
Be careful.

The big shipping companies have paid about 40 million dollars in ransom money so far.

All they need do is hire some expert armed security personnel to protect each ship. It would cost less money than ransoms and they can legally do that.

The question I have is why don't they take that simple step?

If they did, the piracy would come to a quick end.

8. Why didn't they take that simple step ?
Greedy and cheap, I would suppose ....

Due diligence should be exercised in all cases, yet it is normal that individuals and organizations will fail to consider all possible options before the fact ... But does that fact either support the cause of piracy or deny legitimate enforcement of international laws of the sea ?

Not in any way ....

I may decide to hire bodyguards every time I walk down the street, but if I dont, AND I am robbed at gunpoint, that fact would NOT preclude the obligation of law enforcement to do their job and arrest those who caused the crime to occur ...

9. You are not an ocean vessel
Please understand the difference between you walking down the street and a big ship (not a row boat) attacked by fisherman pirates.
