I have some books to sell and want to offer things here first - and ask questions of booksellers

booksellers - any tips that have helped you? I have a paypal account that I plan to use. I've sorted out things according to where I think it would be best to place them (i.e. ebay for ARCs, older books or odds and ends, ABE for more expensive items like signed first editions, university press books, Amazon for more recent books, things that might be of interest because of upcoming movies, etc....

does anyone else list books online and sort them for one venue v. another? I ask because the fees for some are not geared for the smaller vendor, it seems to me.

book buyers - anyone on this board have anything in particular you're interested in?

anyone interested in more expensive books like first editions, signed books, collectibles?

thanks in advance for any input!

4. why do you like alibris, especially?
if I post books on Amazon, they will also show up on alibris, btw. that's a good thing, as far as more bang for the buck.

6. Because I've found things there that
I couldn't find anywhere else. I've been dealing with them for several years, maybe ten, and I've never had a bad experience. Not even close. Everything is exactly as represented.

Their site is beautiful, smooth, easy to navigate, and it's just a very pleasant experience...................

Three Ways to Sell
1. Online at Powells.com
PayPalEnter the ISBN of each book you wish to sell, click "Sell these books," and wait just a few short moments to receive our offer. If you like our bid, just send the books to us (we'll cover the freight) and receive credit to your Powells.com account or payment via PayPal.

Click here to sell us your books online.
2. In Our Stores
Sell your books over the counter any day of the week. If you have several boxes, make sure to arrive at least an hour before our buying tables close or consider calling to make an appointment.

You can also head to our warehouse in Northwest Portland and enjoy the convenient, free parking. You can also drop off your books and return later.

If you're coming in to sell us textbooks that are up-to-date and currently in use, be sure to bring a current student ID.

Please keep in mind that each of our locations buys used books, but each location buys only for its own need.
3. By Arrangement
Powell's seeks large and specialized book collections. We especially value scholarly and other high-quality books. We buy rep samples, library donations and deaccessions, bookstore inventories, and personal libraries.

For collections of 500 books or more, we may arrange to have the books shipped to us for evaluation. Please send us an email with a list of the books (Excel or .csv file preferred) and/or digital photographs of the collection. Lists should include title, author, publisher, ISBN, and quantity. Emails can be sent to sell@powells.com and should include your name, geographical location, and phone number. For more information, please call us at 503-228-4651, ext. 1448, or 1-800-878-7323, ext. 5622.

If your collection is especially large — a bookstore inventory or private collection of approximately 10,000 books or more — and you're located in the United States, we may be able to send our buyers directly to you.

8. no, I'm a vendor.
I'm not interested in selling to other vendors - unless I suddenly decide I don't want to sell books myself.

7. I would say ABE would be the best place for expensive books
that don't already have a bunch of listings for. Ebay isn't too hot for books, the buyers are primarily bargan hunters & dealers - prices seldom get very high perhaps 20-30% of retail.

9. I've been watching book auctions on ebay for a while
and for certain sorts of books, it's a great place.

the aggravating thing about ebay is that books just sit there until the last 15 minutes of a sale. the first week or so is just advertisement. But if someone has a book that's in good condition by an author that is of interest... I've seen those books go from no bids to a big sale in a matter of minutes. and some people wait until an hour or so before an auction closes to put in an automatic bid.

things I've seen that sale are the unusual and the honestly rare or hard-to-find books. things like trade pbs just aren't the place for ebay, imo, unless you want to sell something as a lot - and in those cases you have to have things that were very cheap in the first place to make a little bit of money. in that case, it seems like less trouble to donate something to your local library.

there's the issue of timing, too.

right now isn't a great time for a lot of people but there are things that people get interested in b/c of a new movie or the death of a writer, etc.

on the other hand, books are inexpensive entertainment and it's possible to get great books for less than the cover price.
