Unitarian-Universalists: past, present, simpatico, or thinking about it...
we have a DU Group that we designed especially for you. It is called the 'Seekers on Unique Paths Group.' All of the information is there in the Mission Statement (first post).

I consider myself both to be a Religious Scientist and a Unitarian.

I'm busy studying to take a state bar test; as soon as I'm done, I plan to try to post some interesting threads.

Anyway, it is supposed to be a friendly place for folks who have an affinity for the UU philosophy.

Looking forward to your posts there!

3. Is the Universal Unitarian Church a different body than...
The Unity Church? I once was a memeber of a Unitarian church...and the particular one i belonged to was very appealing to me in the beginning...i remained a member for a few years, but finially left really because it seemed not for me...the one i belonged to..and i do know they are individual and each a little different than the other..but i felt it was too intellectual in orientation for me..and it seemed that often the discussion groups and even the service itself turned out to be more of an intellectual pissing contest and debate exercise than what i wanted. I finially went to another church in a near by city..this was a Unity Church...which for me was all of the best of the Unitarian...but did not have that stricktly intellectual bent to it.

5. Unity is technically different than Unitarian-Universalist.
Edited on Tue Feb-15-05 09:38 PM by Maat
I'm both a Unitarian-Universalist and a Religious Scientist. Why can't I be both? Anyway, Unity is a New Thought like Church of Religious Science (which I have been a member of for about a year). "As you have a new thought, so too shall you have a new experience." Emphasis on positive thinking, meditation, and creative visualization (the power of the mind).

The main difference between Unity and CRS is that Unity has more of a Christian bent, in the technical sense. All three are progressive churches that celebrate all paths to God or Spirit. UU (Unitarian-Universalist) welcomes Atheists. There are a lot of references to Spirit in either Unity or CRS, so an atheist-UU-er might not be happy there. Vice-versa, a CRS-er or Unity-er might be happy at a UU congregation/fellowship.

I like the kind of 'mystical' happy-dappy quality of Unity and CRS churches (of course, every congregation is different - I'm in a red, conservative pocket of a blue state - Cal - so my CRS congregation is kind of middle-of-the-road relative to the rest).

On edit:
It's all good!

That's what we created the DU group to discuss.

Welcome!

7. They are different...
While the Unity Church has, I think, a similar approach of tolerance as the Unitarian Universalism, I believe it is a Christian Church.

I just googled "Unity Church" and found http://www.unityworldhq.org/ . The front page says this:

"Unity is a worldwide movement of prayer, publishing, and education that helps people of all faiths apply positive spiritual principles in their daily lives.

We support all people in their individual quest to know God and find healing in their lives. Our philosophy offers a practical approach to Christianity and teaches that as children of God, we are heir to all that we need."

4. Just wanted to add...
as a member of the Seekers on Unique Paths Group:

I'd say our only real 'rule' is one of tolerance: that all members be respectful of one another's faith or path, whatever it is. There are members of several different faiths there.

I have always wanted a place to discuss matters of spirituality and philosophy in an open-minded, non-dogmatic environment, and was excited to be part of the group when Ma'at suggested it.

You can find the group here:

6. Thanks, Wildflower.
Hopefully, since quite a few check in 'Religion and Theology,' there will be some posting generated. No reason this group shouldn't prosper. And I second your message!

9. I belong to a UU church,
and I like the S.O.U.P. forum. I think the idea was to have a very friendly and open atmosphere for discussing spiritual issues.

11. I'm reading the '100 Questions About UU.'
It states that UUers focus on the 'here and now.' So far, so good. But then it states that most UUers do not believe in the Afterlife (I'm paraphrasing).

I thought that the intent was that we could go to a UU congregation, and believe that our energy continues on if that was our choice. Am I getting it?
