Interesting Editorial thread: Pharisee Nation
a thread in Editorials and Other Articles (I suspect many people don't look much at that forum):
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=103x106415

on Jesus, the Beatitudes, nonviolence and the Bush regime. Echoes a lot of what DU Christians say about the hijacking of their religion.

1. Wolves in sheeps' clothing
Usually the ones that are most disasterous to any faith purportedly come from that faith. These are people who look only at the religious laws and strip any form of spirituality, compassion, or love from the faith. Their creed is often based on hatred, fear, and divisiveness. Sadly, many think that these people, who often wear their religion on their sleeves, represent the entire faith. It makes for a real test of finding the Truth which underlies all faith.

4. Couldn't have said it better myself
I've always seen strong correlations between the pharisees of Jesus' day and the christian right hypocrites. Does the word legalism mean anything to these people?? Thats all the pharisees were concerned with, and its all the christian right is concerned with.

Their hypocrisy seems so obvious, I'm amazed they don't see it for themselves. I can only imagine that a constant blend of marketing, cheerleading, and a LOT of self-rationalization leads a person of the christian right persuasion to become so self-centered, arrogant, and have a feeling of deserving or earning all of the blessings that have been bestowed upon them and this nation. Its as if the world only exists for the 5% of this planet that are lucky enough to live in the United States, and none of the other 95% matters, let alone the billions that were around in the thousands of years of history pre-USA.
