Did anybody see the "Religion and History" program on Faux?
I was working out today (Jan 1) and the only open eliptical was in front of the TV permanently tuned to FOX :puke: (on a side note, why would they put Fox on one extreme end in front of only elipticals and CNN--not that it's much better--on the other extreme end in front of only treadmills? Do they think that dems only run?). Anyway, Gingrich, the fuckhead, was on hosting a show about religion and politics. It was a complete sham. I was listening to my Public Enemy collection on my mp3 but could read the subtitles. The highlight of the show was this, and I paraphrase pretty closely: "At this point (FDR's presidency) no American had even heard of the wall of seperation between church and state but they would soon have it pushed on them." How can anyone spread nonsense like this? I know, I know, it's Faux, but still.

1. Excuse me,
but I have a feeling that my great-great-great-great grandfather heard about seperation of church and state when he read about the addition of the Bill of Rights to the Consitutional Convention. And since my family has had members of the Puritan, Congregational, Spiritualist, and Methodist churches (among others) I bet they are mighty glad that seperation of church and state was there!

2. I kinda thought Jefferson heard about it
when he frickin' wrote it, too. And Madison when he thought chaplins should not be members of congress because their receiving pay from the government would be a violation of the first amendment...which he wrote.

I was just flabergasted at the complete untruths that were being presented on a "news" story. Even from Fox. It was just a collection of flat out lies.

3. LOL!
"I kinda thought Jefferson heard about it ... when he frickin' wrote it .."

Yes, this recent law graduate believes that Jefferson was well aware of the phrase, and made it very clear he believed in it.

;-)

4. Indeed. Jefferson coined the phrase; the concept itself has been around since pre-Roman times. n/t

8. I should have made clear that I was aware of his ...

famous "Letter to the Danbury Baptists," in which he coined the phrase. The Hardright Religious Zealots have tried to minimize the importance of this quote; but, they will never succeed.

Jefferson basically laid out in that document, as well as others, what was meant by the words in the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.

Long live those words (their importance, and the related case law)!

5. TV-B-Gone
I got one and it works like a champ. It's a small black plastic gizmo that fits onto a key chain and can be used to turn any make of TV off.

7. Not only did our early ancestor in this country know about it but
many of them left countries that were forcing them to fight religious wars. Europe was on fire fighting between their Catholics, Lutherans and Protestants. Our founding father knew exactly what having government enforce religious laws meant and they wanted nothing to do with it. In Germany the ruler of each little state determined what religion his/her people were no matter what they thought. England was not much better and it is well known that they forced their religious concept on both Ireland and Scotland.
