Did immigration agents violate civil rights?

On Feb. 20, agents from the Department of Homeland Security’s Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement came to town with arrest warrants for 10 people who had allegedly ignored deportation orders; during the sweep, they also arrested 28 other people suspected of being in the United States illegally. An initial report had put the total arrested at 36 individuals.
On Monday, East End Clergy Concerned, an interfaith group, sent a letter to Representative Tim Bishop in which the group alleges that I.C.E. agents harassed and violated the civil rights of the people inside the houses raided in the predawn sweep.
Fifteen representatives from local congregations signed the letter. They included Cantor Debra Stein of the Jewish Center of the Hamptons, Oswaldo Palomo and the Rev. Orlando Cardona of Comunidad Cristiana, and the Rev. Alison Cornish of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Bridgehampton.
The Rev. Yvette Schock, the pastor at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Amagansett, who also signed the letter, said members of the group have spoken to about 25 people who were at four houses that I.C.E. targeted. Some reported that they were not shown warrants upon request, nor were they allowed to call for an attorney or the local police, she said ...
