VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI joined President Barack Obama and Queen Elizabeth II on Friday by launching his own YouTube channel, the latest Vatican effort to reach out to the digital generation.

The Vatican said it was launching the channel to broaden Benedict's audience while also giving the Holy See better control over the papal image online.

In his inaugural foray, Benedict welcomed viewers to this "great family that knows no borders" and said he hoped they would "feel involved in this great dialogue of truth."

The site, , was launched the same day the pontiff praised as a "gift to humanity" the benefits of social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace in forging friendships and understanding. http://www.youtube.com/vaticanit

9. Sounds like it. Strange how DUers think it's funny

to piss on what Catholics hold sacred but horrible when the Koran is desecrated or a synagogue is vandalized. It doesn't speak well for "liberals" to be like that.

10. Yep.
Freepers are not the only narrow-minded denizens of the Internets.

I don't condone interrupting a service or vandalizing church property, but desecrating a Eucharist or a Koran at home harms no one.

21. Don't get your hopes up.
Religious people on Youtube are notorious for cowardly disabling ratings and for refusing to post any and all dissenting remarks. VenomFangX is a good example.

4. The wafer would dissolve, of course. But thanks for

the dig at Catholicism. I don't know what I'd do if a day at DU went by without such a dig.

20. Did you think Catholicism was above criticism?
Some of us believe that sacred cows make great hamburgers.

11. Hey, I bitch all the time about the bishops and priests trying to run MY Church,
but my mamma taught me long ago that it's impolite to go into someone else's house and piss on the floor.

16. What happens if you mix diet Coke and a communion wafer
depends on whether or not the wafer has been blessed and undergone transubstantiation. If unblessed, not much happens, maybe some time in Purgatory because it's still disrepectful. If blessed, you will burn in hell for all eternity - I'm sure that's what the nuns would have told us (at least pre-Vatican II).
