Vatican criticizes Obama
Vatican criticizes Obama for ending ban on funds for groups offering information on abortionsBy Associated Press
9:29 AM EST, January 24, 2009
VATICAN CITY (AP) — Vatican officials said Saturday they were disappointed by President Barack Obama's decision to end a ban on federal funding for international groups that perform abortions or provide information on them.

Monsignor Rino Fisichella, who heads the Vatican's Pontifical Academy for Life, urged Obama to listen to all voices in America without "the arrogance of those who, being in power, believe they can decide of life and death."

Fisichella said in an interview published Saturday in Corriere della Sera that "if this is one of President Obama's first acts, I have to say, in all due respect, that we're heading quickly toward disappointment."

<snip>

"This deals a harsh blow not only to us Catholics but to all the people across the world who fight against the slaughter of innocents that is carried out with the abortion," another top official with the Academy for Life, Monsignor Elio Sgreccia, told the ANSA news agency.

LOL that was quick, How long did it take for them to address Pedophile priests for Jesus?

14. Message from the Vatican to Obama has NO SUCH COMMENT:
TELEGRAM FROM HOLY FATHER TO PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA

VATICAN CITY, 21 JAN 2009 (VIS) - Made public yesterday afternoon was a telegram from Benedict XVI to Barack Obama, congratulating him on his inauguration as forty-fourth president of the United States of America.

In the English-language telegram the Holy Father offers his "cordial good wishes, together with the assurance of my prayers that Almighty God will grant you unfailing wisdom and strength in the exercise of your high responsibilities.

"Under your leadership", he adds, "may the American people continue to find in their impressive religious and political heritage the spiritual values and ethical principles needed to co-operate in the building of a truly just and free society, marked by respect for the dignity, equality and rights of each of its members, especially the poor, the outcast and those who have no voice.

"At a time when so many of our brothers and sisters throughout the world yearn for liberation from the scourge of poverty, hunger and violence, I pray that you will be confirmed in your resolve to promote understanding, co- operation and peace among the nations, so that all may share in the banquet of life which God wills to set for the whole human family.

The Pope concludes: "Upon you and your family, and upon all the American people, I willingly invoke the Lord's blessings of joy and peace".

A whole list of items on Gaza and the poor, but only the above about Obama:

Please note this person's JOB is to run the institute on Abortion, as such a statement like he made is fully expected. What is important is what the Vatican as a whole says about Obama but they have decided to say nothing but the above.

15. What you quoted
is the obligatory BS that the Vatican is so good at turning out, to try to keep their image polished and their PR capital in the black. You can be quite certain that this is not the sentiment they are expressing among themselves behind closed doors, and that Monsignor Fisichella's pronouncement is much closer to their true position. What is most important is not what the Vatican says, but what they will do in opposition to Obama's policies on family planning.

I'm sure that the New York Times can't be faulted for not talking about Pearl Harbor in it's Dec. 6, 1941 edition.

20. It seems to me that the point you're trying to make....
...about the Vatican's (read Pope's) supposed congratulatory good feelings for Barack Obama's ascension to the Presidency, seems to discount the hope that the Pope's "prayers that Almighty God will grant you unfailing wisdom and strength in the exercise of your high responsibilities" and that Obama's actions here isn't an example of exactly what the Almighty wants. Remember, he moves in mysterious ways, etc....

And further, the idea that the jerk who wrote this little missive didn't have the approval and sanction of the Pope before it went to press is ludicrous. That idea makes about as much sense as the Pope not realizing that he just reinstated right-wing nutjob priests and Holocaust Deniers:

Bishop Richard Williamson, Holocaust Denier, Reinstated By Pope

The Huffington Post
NICOLE WINFIELD (AP)
January 24, 2009 03:38 PM EST

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI has lifted the excommunications of four traditionalist bishops, including that of a Holocaust denier whose rehabilitation sparked outrage among Jewish groups.

The four bishops were excommunicated 20 years ago after they were consecrated by the late ultraconservative Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre without papal consent _ a move the Vatican said at the time was an act of schism.

The Vatican said Saturday that Benedict rehabilitated the four as part of his efforts to bring Lefebvre's Society of St. Pius X back into the Vatican's fold.

But the move came just days after one of the four, British Bishop Richard Williamson, was shown in a Swedish state TV interview saying that historical evidence "is hugely against 6 million Jews having been deliberately gassed."

- Now tell me, what should we believe? Actions or words? No matter how one tries to smooth it over, these people have no moral authority to speak to anyone. None.

Hide and defend the local pedophiles while moving them from parish to parish!

That makes you an instant celeb at the Vatican.

22. The Vatican has never learned that it has no right to interfere with sovereign states.
One would think that the Great Schism, the Protestant Reformation, the 30 years War, Italian nationhood, etc etc. would have taught them otherwise... oh well.

Go fuck yourself.

We, in America, could care less what you think in your tiny little sovereign gilded palace.

Perhaps if you hadn't given the Defender of Pedophiles a place of honor in your precious little gem encrusted palace, we might actually give a shit.
