A friends Facebook status reads "Note to self: Study less. Pray more."...
:wtf:

I'm pretty sure praying that one learns the material is less valuable than actually learning the material.

They are in for a rude awakening when God doesn't answer their prayers.

1. Praying doesn't take long
I see no reason why your friend can't do both.

2. Depends on what you mean by pray
If the friend meant saying prayers and asking for God's help in passing a test, I agree that he'll get slapped silly by reality.
However, if by praym he means never losing sight of his spiritual side and keeping in touch with the Creator, then he might have a point. There is more to life than just studying and working on the material plane.

4. Reminds me of that old joke...
Little Boy praying before bed: And God, please make Phoenix the capital of Kansas.
Mom: Why do you want God to make Phoenix the capital of Kansas?
Little Boy: Because that's what I put on my Geography test today.

If she wanted it to remain private, she wouldn't have posted it for everyone to see.

18. His(?) friend CHOSE to share with the world
Edited on Wed Oct-14-09 12:08 AM by darkstar3
a trite message on how they believe they can further their own quest for knowledge through prayer. IOW, this person turned their Facebook page into a church sign, and church signs may be commented on by any passers by. This is especially true in cases of anti-intellectualism.

Oh, I'm sorry, I guess us mean old atheists should just shut up and let you have your party...

even here on DU, it becomes EVERYONE'S business. Don't you realize that? Just like your post became MY business.

11. It seems you haven't considered that this was a joke...
as in all he/she can do now is pray.

And, assuming it was not meant in jest, you no more know that God hasn't or won't answer the prayer as the prayer can be that it has or will be answered.

You might consider spending less time looking for ways to get angry about others' religion.

17. Coming from someone who recently
Edited on Wed Oct-14-09 12:02 AM by darkstar3
provided such deep insight into what I would consider the more reasonable side of faith, I find this statement flabbergasting.

Study after long study has attempted to solve the riddle of prayer, and they tend to come up with the same thing: It's a placebo effect in health cases, and bears no more benefit in mental control or acuity than meditation.

And so, though I find the Facebook status just as trite as the statement 'Let go and let God', I will accept the following:

Prayer|meditation + study >= study alone

But of course, that's not what AOW's friend is saying.

I really hope no one here is trying to make the case that knowledge can be miraculously delivered.

21. Not exactly
but the focused, meditative state that one finds in prayer can certainly make it easier to gain and maintain knowledge.

And I certainly think there are times when looking in boosts one's ability to see outside.

There's nothing miraculous about that, really.
