Is the Fundie God a terrorist?
I got propositioned by one of these people for their Bible study class and I've been thinking about this. God if he exists must be greater than both the best and worst things man could ever do. Why would He be so petty as to sit there and count every little mistake these people make?

So what else can you call someone who threatens to torture you if you don't do what they say? Basically, its using the fear of hellfire and damnation to make people act differently. Terrorists use fear, and so does the Fundie God, if you take their Holy books literally.

1. Actually their holy books don't say anything like that. At least Jesus
only talked about love. How the fundies claimed to have anything to do with Jesus is beyond me.

2. What about Mark 9?
Jesus spoke to the disciples about the need to cut off those that offend. From the KJV:

43And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

44Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

45And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

46Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

47And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:

48Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched

3. Also Luke 16:23 and book of Revelations, among other verses (edited)
Edited on Mon Jun-27-05 06:24 PM by oxbow
In Luke 16, Jesus' parable of the unjust steward, the rich man is sent to hell, and his pleas to Abraham are in vain:

22And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

23And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. <....>

25But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

And I'm not even going to start on Revelations. Even though Jesus is not directly speaking, John the Divine is downright sadistic in how much he enjoys the pain of his enemies.

We also have damnation mentioned in Matthew 23:14, Luke 20:47, Mark 3:29 (for only blaspheming!), as well as the books of John, Romans, 1 Corinithians, 2 Thessalonians and Timothy and 2 Peter.

4. Okay, I slept through Sunday school, and seminary.
The only thing I got out of seminary was liberation theology. That was before the right wing death squads killed all of the liberation theologians.

6. I agree with you that Jesus taught love
I don't think the Bible is infallible though, or a good guide on how to live your life! Hell, Abraham almost knifed his own son because some voice in his head told him to. No God that I know would ask such an awful thing.

The OT God and the NT god just seem totally disconnected from each other. OT God is wrathful, jealous, kills whoever doesn't agree with him. NT God is compassionate and cares about the poor and afflicted (for the most part).

As for Jesus' divinity, I just don't know. It's not very relevant to me. I think of Christ more as one of those great teachers who are sent to us every couple of hundred years, like Gandhi and the Buddha.

"I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."
-Gandhi

13. Jesus has little to do with right-wing Christianity.
I to could care less about divinity. It just seems like magical thinking which dilutes the ethical message.

14. It depends on what you believe
God, not the voice in Abrahams head, told him to sacrafice his son. This was OT of course. God knew that it was not required and stopped him. After Jesus came to wash us clean of our sins, there was no need for sacrafice. It was more a test of faith when God told Abraham to sacrafice his son. I know how you feel though. When I read it for the first time I was horrified. There are a lot of instances of sacrafice in the Torah, first 5 books of the Bible. Also, Jesus did a bit of violence. Remember in Matthew when he drove the money changers out of the temple, but it wasn't anger it was rightous indignation. Like I said, it's really all in what you believe.

5. Certainly. What was the flood?
Edited on Mon Jun-27-05 08:31 PM by trotsky
It caused (supposedly) global chaos and destruction for the sole purpose of affecting social/political change.

That's terrorism.

12. Good grief.
If you're going to believe in creationist nonsense, at least TRY and get your numbers close.

A 300 to 400 feet rise in sea level? Mt. Ararat is 16,916 feet tall. (http://www.armenianheritage.com/peararat.htm)

Where did the water go, and come from, indeed.

15. The bible is mainly stories made up by men.
I believe there is one exception of a female writing a chapter.

The god of the OT was an Alpha Male Warrior God.The Iraelites were real war like and took over a lot of territories. In some of the stories their god helped them in waging war. It's all nonesense.
