1. You do know there are liberal Christians here, right?
Edited on Wed Dec-16-09 10:32 AM by AspenRose
Christians who aren't fundies? Like Steven (sic) Colbert, whom you quote. He's Catholic.

And you do know that Christianity isn't the only religion in the world....?

And why isn't this in the Religion forum?

22. It's a great way to defeat Dems, divide US on religion.
Some posters around here seem to be trolls, too glib for anyones good, or possibly just plainly oblivious.

They could care less about Dems, people they write to annoy and not about much else it seems at times.

If you find it troubling, use the ignore feature.

They won't be happy until we all join them on their anti-god crusade. Even then, I doubt they'll be happy.

2. Yes, and so?
I'm an atheist, but what's the point of posting something like this? Are you trying to start a fight with other DUers? There's a name for posts like that. They're called flamebait.

5. Thanks. I don't like proselytizing, whereever it comes from.
I can't see any use in atheists trying to actively belittle people who have religious beliefs without provocation.

And you're right; if this belongs anywhere, it's in the religion forum, but I'd object to it there too. There's enough provocation going on right now at DU. We don't need any more.

I always assume the search for spiritual knowledge requires some questioning and introspection.
Maybe I am wrong.

15. This has nothing to do with questioning and introspections.
It has to do with taunting.

As an atheist, I've written lots of posts about the futility of religious belief. I write them in response to other posts. I don't taunt people. That serves no purpose. Besides, I have no interest in "converting" religious believers. I leave that sort of thing to others.

25. Not really. It will only annoy those who have religious beliefs.
It will change no minds at all. In any case, I question the rationality of trying to change people's minds with regard to religious belief. It seems a waste of time, frankly. People either come to understand or they do not, and that almost always happens on its own. I don't know any atheists who were convinced by another atheist.

27. How did you? For me, it was gaining knowledge and
recognizing that belief in myths was illogical. So, I quit doing that. What others believe is none of my business, nor am I interested, particularly. How they act, on the other hand, may affect me, so I may react to bad actions based on religious beliefs. The beliefs? They're irrelevant to me, just as much as people's preferences in automobiles or wines are.

31. Agreed, but who is trying to change anyones mind?
Certainly not me. I could care less what someone believes up until that belief is forced upon me, especially when Im told what I can and cannot do or have to behave in a certain way because of a belief.

"Religion easily has the best bullshit story of all time. Think about it. Religion has convinced people that there’s an invisible man…living in the sky. Who watches everything you do every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten specific things he doesn’t want you to do. And if you do any of these things, he will send you to a special place, of burning and fire and smoke and torture and anguish for you to live forever, and suffer, and burn, and scream, until the end of time. But he loves you. He loves you. He loves you and he needs money" - George Carlin

:)

Just wanted to add, arguing with religious people makes as much sense as talking to a piece of bread. Same with religious people trying convince a bunch of atheist that they have the "truth", and that atheists are "intellectually immature" (this is the best)
One (won't name names) person on this forum does this quite often - to me it shows his lack of faith- it also reveals how completely insecure he is.

very sad.

24. Thanks. Good to see the Edison quote.
He also said this, in an interview with the NY TIMES on Oct. 2, 1910:

Nature is what we know. We do not know the gods of religions. And nature is not kind, or merciful, or loving. If God made me – the fabled God of the three qualities of which I spoke: mercy, kindness, love – He also made the fish I catch and eat. And where do His mercy, kindness, and love for that fish come in? No; nature made us – nature did it all – not the gods of the religions.

Edison's company, General Electric, was inundated with irate letters blasting Edison as an atheist and infidel. Proving that stuff like the War On Xmas and the Great Persecution Of American Xians is nothing new.

Excuse me...

Anyway, this kerfuffle horrified General Electric's board of directors. They asked Edison to retract his comments. He didn't exactly retract them, but he gave another interview where he slightly softened his comments. He said he was only speaking for himself, but in all his scientific experiments, he had never seen any evidence of a "soul."

He also noted that where many people saw God, he was happy just seeing Nature.

I like this Edison story:

Edison's second wife, Mina, was a devout Methodist who was active in church and missionary work. Shortly after their marriage, she decided to convert Edison.

To that end, she invited a houseful of preachers and assorted holy men to tag-team him with religious windbaggery and wear him down until he accepted JeBus etc.

So with Edison a captive audience, the assorted Holy Blowhards started counting those angels dancing on their pin-heads.

Edison got out of his chair and said: "I'm not listening to another minute of this damned nonsense." Then he stalked out of the room and made himself invisible until the god-botherers cleared out of his house.

After that, Mrs. Edison gave up. The Edisons agreed to disagree about religion and lived happily together until Edison's death.
