R Crumb insists that he produced a graphic version of Genesis

exactly as written, with nothing left out. Here is how he portrays the Creator



Where in Genesis does it say that the Creator is a somber old man in a white beard?
Why not portray the Creator thus:

1. Is that how you'd draw the creator of Original Sin?

The tormentor of Abraham and Job? The cheerleader for slaughter of Israel's enemies? That takes some imagination!

and don't forget - the Bible also describes God thusly:

Genesis 1:27 Women and Men created in God’s image

“Humankind was created as God's reflection: in the divine image God created them; female and male, God made them."

Hosea 11:3-4 God described as a mother

God: “Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, I who took them up in my arms; but they did not know that I healed them. I led them with cords of human kindness, with bands of love. I was to them like those who lift infants to their cheeks. I bent down to them and fed them.”

Deuteronomy 32:11-12 God described as a mother eagle

“Like the eagle that stirs up its nest, and hovers over its young, God spreads wings to catch you, and carries you on pinions.”

Deuteronomy 32:18 God who gives birth

“You were unmindful of the Rock that bore you; you forgot the God who gave you birth.”

Isaiah 66:13 God as a comforting mother

God: “As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.”

Isaiah 49:15 God compared to a nursing mother

God: “Can a woman forget her nursing child, or show no compassion for the child of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.”

Isaiah 42:14 God as a woman in labor

God: “For a long time I have held my peace, I have kept myself still and restrained myself; now I will cry out like a woman in labor, I will gasp and pant.”

2. Artistic license.

- But I like the fact that he gave the snake feet. Artists portraying the snake in the classical art works tend to forget that Yahweh cursed the snake for telling Eve about the apple, by making it crawl of it's belly for the rest of eternity. Which could only suggest that snakes had feet before!

Picky. I seems you do not approve of Mr Crumbs interpretation. I think it's bloody brilliant!

6. Mr. Crumb perpetuates the steroetype that people who read

the Bible envision the creator as an old man with a beard. Many (most?) do, but not all of us.

7. OK so which

stereotype would you like him to use? This is a circular argument, discussion or whatever. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions or interpretations. I myself do not believe he his an old wrinkled man or woman because the bible is a collection of stories passed down by word of mouth throughout the years until someone decided to write them down then it was reinterpreted by many to fit their specific need. And yes, I like Mr Crumbs work.

So if he wants to illustrate the Bible in a strictly Western tradition,that is his right as an artist.
But wouldn't it be cool if he used this as the model?
