Rev. Jerry Falwell Attacks: Christian Alliance is “Hardly Christian”

On July 8th, the Reverend Jerry Falwell sent out an email to the Moral Majority Coalition and the Liberty Alliance attacking the Christian Alliance for Progress. He claims that we are "hardly Christian" in part because of our political views.

On the Sunday following his email, the Christian Alliance received an onslaught of comments that were clearly fueled by Reverend Falwell's words of anger. Many of these messages repeated his bitter tone, but almost none say anything about the values Jesus taught. Click here to see some of the comments that we received from his followers.

It is time to respond to Reverend Falwell, and to tell him that he does not speak for all Christians, that he does not speak for YOU.

1. RW Christian are known for their anti-Christian beliefs.

They are anti-Christians - as evil as anyone Jesus would have rallied against. It's a shame they can't see how vile and evil they are.

3. Falwell and others always remind me

what not to be or do. He has such a hard edge and he's so very little in the scope of things. Poor man has gone throughout his life thinking he knows God, yet he has no clue of compassion, forgiveness or acceptance. Why do I waste my time defending against such a mental and spiritual infant.:shrug:

4. While I am not a Christian, I am a person of faith.

I am a New-Thought Unitarian Universalist (I like both Religious Science and UU).

And I support the Christian Alliance and what this fine organization is trying to do wholeheartedly.

How dare Falwell insist that his is the only version of faith that is correct?

Or is this really about money, power and tit for tat - in the sense that the religious right extremists in this country have teamed up with the corporatists to keep the money flowing into their respective organizations? They will do and say whatever they have to towards that end.

Shame on them.

5. I signed the site's message to Falwell.

"Here is what I put:

While I am not a Christian, I support my progressive Christian friends wholeheartedly. I believe that each individual has a unique and special path to God, and that is the basis for supporting each other in our individual journeys. I am a Religious Scientist and a Unitarian-Universalist.

Mr. Falwell, you state, "It sounds like the Alliance got its talking points from Howard Dean," as if that's unique. Look at your own talking points: they sound like they came the Republican Party.

You need to accept that your version of faith is true for you, but not for others. It is no more correct than mine is. Free yourself of your rigidity - you will be a much happier person.
