'Christ the Redeemer' undergoes renovationNECN/APTN
Mar 13, 2010Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Rio de Janeiro's most famous monument, the Christ the Redeemer statue, is undergoing renovation works this year, aimed at preserving it from damage caused by the environment. Architects are researching materials that could withstand rain and lightning, which often strikes the soapstone monument, at an elevation of more than 2,296 feet.
"We are analyzing the materials in a laboratory and trying to see which material would be most appropriate for the statue in this location. We are also looking into the possibility of placing a silicone coat over the statue , which will help preserve it longer," architect Diogo Carlos said.
The pricey facelift is estimated at 4 million US dollars, Father Omar Raposo, the Rector of the Christ the Redeemer said, and is being funded by Brazilian mining giant Vale Rio Doce and by church contributions. Although the 130 foot effigy is still open to the public, visitors venturing up to Corcovado Mountain will see the Christ statue surrounded by scaffolding and several dozen laborers.
The Christ the Redeemer was inaugurated in 1931. It was designed by French sculptor Paul Landowski and took nine years to build. It was voted one of the seven modern wonders of the world in 2007. The renovated statue is scheduled to be inaugurated in June 2010.
