But having affirmed Judaism and Christianity it would logically follow that the Quran affirms that any false and fruitless religion will fall-
Mathew 7.19 “Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire”
“For We assuredly sent amongst every people a messenger (with the command), “Serve Allah and eschew Evil”: of the people were some whom Allah guided, and some on whom Error became inevitably (established). So travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who denied (the Truth).”
(Al Qur’an 16:36)
And there never was a people, without a warner having lived among them (In the past).
(Al Qur’an 35:24)
Of some messengers We have already told you the story; of others we have not and to Moses Allah spoke direct.
(Al Qur’an 4:164)
We did aforetime send Messengers before you: of them there are some whose story we have related to you, and some whose story we have not related to you.
(Al Qur’an 40:78)
And to every people a guide.
(Al Qur’an 13:7)
To every people (was sent) a Messenger: when their Messenger comes (before them), the matter will be judged between them with justice, and they will not be wronged.
(Al Qur’an 10:47)
As I understand these passages (including Mathew) every time and people get a messenger/prophet and false religions bearing no fruit eventualy get hewn down.
The Vedas and the Upanishads have been standing and producing good fruit for a little while now.
;-)
“a mind whose knowledge wasn't confined to what was readily available in places where the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) lived or visited...then one would expect there to be references in the Koran not merely to the New Testament and the Old Testament…”
Then the Quran would not only need to serve as the revelation for that time and people and but sort out any misinterpretations re local/mid eastern Christianity/Judaism but then go on to sort out the “books of religions having few adherents at that time in the Middle East.”
Why bother?
Why not just cut to the chase and go for universal science?

THE HOLY SCRIPTURES EXAMINED IN THE LIGHT OF MODERN KNOWLEDGE
http://www.witness-pioneer.org/vil/Books/MB_BQS/default.htm“In view of the level of knowledge in Muhammad's day, it is inconceivable that many of the statements In the Qur'an which are connected with science could have been the work of a man. It is, moreover, perfectly legitimate, not only to regard the Qur'an as the expression of a Revelation, but also to award it a very special place, on account of the guarantee of authenticity it provides and the presence in it of scientific statements which, when studied today, appear as a challenge to explanation in human terms.”

"Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together, then We clove them
asunder and We got every living thing out of the water. Will they not then believe?"
