First international Muslim film festival to open in Kazan

MOSCOW, July 27 (RIA Novosti, Olga Lipich) - No action and horror movies will be shown at the Golden Minbar International Muslim Film Festival in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, said Sheikh Ravil Gainutdin, the festival's president and head of the Council of Russian Muftis.

"The forum is designed to present the history, culture and life of Muslims," the mufti said.

He said "good films" should be shown about Muslims to create an unbiased image of Islam in Russia and the world in light of recent events.

"Muslims want to underline that Islam welcomes education and respect to the older generation and other people, including Christians, Jews and representatives of other religions," Gainutdin said.

2. Oh, I dunno

personally, I find films full of "action" the most boring kind, because there is really not much substance to them. Give me a movie like "Mind Walk" any day of the week. But then, that's me. If you like the other kind, go ahead and watch them.

I'd be intersted to know what films were shown. I have a film of dervishes doing zkr that is really awesome.

Only wants documentaries at the film festival.

So it should more properly be called the "Golden Minbar International Muslim documentary Film Festival".

OTOH, what sort of "muslim" films are out there? "The Message", an oldie but a goodie and the fairly new animated "Muhammad" come to mind... Anything else?

5. Creating an unbiased image of Islam in Russia

should be a fun task.

And having the film festival in the capital of the old khanate is a good start--the successor to the Horde.
