Archbishop Peter Akinola, the most powerful Anglican leader outside of Britain, is calling for the Church of England to be suspended from the denomination.

Akinola, the leader of Nigeria's Anglicans and the chair of the Council of Anglican Provinces of Africa, has been the leader in the attack on church moderates over the role of gays in the faith.

His ire with the Church of England stems from a decision to allow priests in same-sex relationships to register as domestic partners under Britain's civil unions law which comes into effect in December. (story)

Even thought the mother church is the bastard child of the Roman church, I still find it odd that newbies are staging an Anglican coup.

I grew up in the Episcopal church, and our parish still had Latin mass long after the Catholics switched to English.

3. I was, still am technically, Episcopalian and I wish we would just let...

The fundies just go off on their own. I realize it's not that easy, but the 3rd world and other fundies would be better of just moving to the Baptist or Catholic church, depending on which direction they want to jump. The one thing I loved about the Episcopal church (I'm agnostic now) was the room for individual thought. This Nigerian goofball seems too big a fan of dogma and doctrine...........

than long-time adherents.

The Africans were mostly converted by Victorian missionaries, who forced them to give up their traditional sexual customs in favor of the Victorian type.

The African church has stayed in Victorian mode ever since.

One of our priests had a Ugandan observer staying at her home during the last General Convention. He was adamant in saying that there was no homosexuality in Uganda.

But kicking the Church of England out of the Anglican Communion is sort of like the rest of the United States kicking out the original 13 states.

7. Such a suspension means nothing, really, as the Anglican Communion

is voluntary, and no one had governing power over anyone else, outside the diocesan level, I believe.
