Nasty Mosque opposition, I've lived through this before
though on a smaller local scale. I would recommend watching the documentary made about that controversy, if you haven't already seen it:

http://www.upf.tv/films-menu/talking-through-walls.html (I make a couple of appearances in this documentary)

This film has been shown on PBS and at film festivals all over the world.

I've met few people more spiritual than the leader of this mosque. In the face of extreme hate, he never angered but found peace with his religion.

I was also very impressed with and proud of the south jersey religious leaders and politicians....and the numerous people who came through for this project. there were even a considerable number of non-muslim construction contractors donated time and materials for this project.

I hope that the wise people of our country can prevail and show similar compassion.

1. I watched it last week.
A developer wants to build on land it owns and wants to contract with a big-box store to be the "anchor." There's no legal objection to building the complex or having teh big-box store there. The developer has a legal right to build.

Yet lots of people--mostly progressives, some others--and the mayor got together to complain about it and say it shouldn't be built for all kinds of reasons, some reasoned, some not reasoned, but many expressioned emotionally. A fair amount of hate shown for the developer and big-box brand and store. The "community" (mostly the next-door community) didn't want the "outsider" to build and attract the wrong kind of people or have an untoward effect on their local community.
