A creationist evangelist was scheduled for my town on Saturday night!!!
... but cancelled because of the 'hurricane' - which, up here, consisted of about one inch of rain over about 20 hours... hmm...

Anyway, I was just reading last Friday's paper (happened to be laying around - the paper, I mean), and I saw the hilarious/frightening ad:

DR KENT HOVIND
A Creation Seminar

September 24, 6:00pm, high school auditorium

Featuring answers to some of the most important questions of our day:
-How old is the earth?
-Is the earth billions of years old?
-What about carbon dating?
-Are dinosaurs mentioned in the Bible?
-Is evolution a science of a religion?
-Is macro-evolution proveable?
-Can evolution and the Bible both be true?
-Are dinosaurs alive today?

Kent Hovind is considered one of the foremost authorities on science and the Bible. He speaks at schools, universities, churches, and on radio programs. He's dedicated to the proclamation of factual, scientific evidence supporting the Biblical record of creation and the history of the world.

His fact-filled creation seminars are exciting and informative, causing even the most devout evolutionist to take notice. Christians are encouraged in their faith, and nonbelievers seriously challenged to reconsider their beliefs.

Inviate a friend and learn the real facts about creation.

DR HOVIND HAS A STANDING OFFER OF $250,000 TO ANYONE WHO CAN OFFER EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE (SCIENTIFIC PROOF) FOR DARWINIAN EVOLUTION.

* * *

... now does this mean that, if we call evolution a 'religion' we can get tax-exempt status for scientific research of all kinds? Like maybe do some deprogramming exercises on people who have evolved with genes that make them gullible? (StellaBlue throws hands up!):eyes:

To see the wackiness for yourself:

1. The Dr Dino loophole
His challenge has been slammed many times. But he has paid no one as yet. See there is a loophole in his challenge. It specifically is that you have to convince him that evolution is true. Nothing about science or anything. If he is not convinced then he is not paying out.

Here is a link to some info about his so called challenge. http://talkorigins.org/faqs/hovind/

11. What a great idea
I'm going to start a lottery based on the same criteria. You win if I feel you won, no matter how many tickets you buy.

2. DR DINO ???
You missed a chance to see the legendary Dr Dino?

Wait until I tell Onager, he'll be so upset.

Why, he tells us why evolution is stupid when we visit Kent Hovind’s Dinosaur Adventure Land.

Don't tell me you haven't been yet.

Check out the website: http://www.dinosauradventureland.com/

And for a really rockin' review on it, check out this CSICOP article:

You have my condolences.
Maybe he'll come back.:)

5. OH... It's THAT guy?
Bwhahahaha!

I feel privileged that my community is considered enough of a communist-atheist-conspiracy hotbed to merit a visit! I wasn't aware that there was a single person other than me in this town who 'believes' in evolution!

hahahahahaha

I DO know about this guy - read about his silly creation museum in Newsweek.

6. I'd be curious to see
how many people actually attend those things.

But if it's a lot, I'm probably better off not knowing.

7. Your right
I have been to a few of these type of things. It ain't pretty.

They have debates as well. Of course their side has better PR so a lot more believers are in the audience. So all the ID/Creationist has to do is play to the emotional game. Throw some questions that will send the scientist into a frenzy of long details to answer. Blech.

10. You've seen Mr. "Why Evolution is Stupid" ?
I don't think I could stomach it.

Unless I was under the influence and went with a few friends, of course.

Sort of a concentrated form of the great barroom pastime of people watching.

Just kidding. Heh...

Many things upset me, but a cancelled lecture by Dr. Dino is NOT one of them.

4. Oh, not breathing is bad.
Better not visit Dinosaur Adventure Land.

Or read up on Creation Bootcamp which was held there this past spring.

Could be dangerous.

8. I think I see Dr. Dino's plan now
Edited on Thu Sep-29-05 09:46 PM by GreenJ
The lack of oxygen is going to kill a hell of a lot of brain cells which would make me much more likely to listen to his "science." I almost wish that place was near me so I could go see it (and maybe slap on a few Darwin stickers in a few places).

btw I rented Dog Soldiers tonight, I haven't gotten a chance to watch it yet but I think I will in a little while.

edited for claire it eee

12. $250,000 for scientific proof ????
Proof, something best left to mathematics and alcohol. Science never establishes an hypothesis as a fact, support of disprove. "Dr" Hovind has proposed a challenge which can never be accomplished.

"Foremost authority on science and the Bible." If we are not careful, the Conservofascists will have a Bureau of Science and the Bible. Let the inquisition begin.

14. Everyone interested in Hovind should read "300 Creationist Lies"

Long read but well worth it. One of the best parts is in answer #8 where the author states "This is what Scientists call "Bullshit"!!

It is funny and pretty well researched. The author describes how Hovind deceptively seems to come out on top in public arguments because he states things in a simplistic way that have complicated scientific answers and if anyone in opposition to him isn't prepared they stand little chance of showing this man to be the asshole and charlatan he is.
