Muslims in Ireland celebrate Ramadan
Since last Monday, Irish Muslims have been celebrating the holy month of Ramadan, a period of abstaining from food, water, and bad behavior for thirty days.

Ramadan is a test, set by Allah, and "an opportunity to go nearer to God and praise him," Khurrum Khan of Co. Meath told the Irish Times.

“There are hundreds of benefits to fasting in this month,” he said.

“It is not just about the fast. I am more spiritual and am doing more good deeds during this time than other months.”

5. They could feast on what they choose in the evening, so long as it's not against dietary laws..
Unlike Hindus, Muslims can eat (halal) beef; it's pork and ham that Muslims, like religious Jews, must avoid. And there is certainly nothing to forbid Muslims from eating cabbage, or any other vegetable.

2. I'm not sure I'd use the word 'celebrate' for Ramadan, any more than for Lent or Yom Kippur...
but yes, this is indeed the time when many people are fasting. The time of Ramadan changes each year. It's tough when, as now, it is in the summer, because long days mean longer fasting, and in hot countries the deprivation of water is particularly hard.

Ramadan, and its celebratory end, Eid, are well-known and accepted in much of Britain nowadays, especially in the cities. In the local primary schools here, all children learn about Ramadan, just as they all learn about Christmas and Easter and the festivals of other faiths.

3. Tes, there's been a lot of commentary about how the fast is harder this year.
I found it interesting how Ireland is starting to acknowledge it.

7. You're right. I'd say "observe" is the word that should have been used.
Eid, however, yes, that's a celebration.
