Who believes in Hell?
And, from those, who believes in being happy in Heaven while one's loved ones are in Hell?

2. Actually, it was my realization that Hell and Satan
made absolutely no sense, that started me on the road to atheism.

3. I believe in hell or a please where the damned are punished
but only the worst of the worst are sent there, including murders, rapists, politicians who break their word and people like that. You may feel the last one to be silly but for a politician to break the peoples trust is one of the most heinous crimes in my book.

4. Someday
If, someday far in the future, I find myself sitting between Jerry Fallwell and Pat Robertson, as they are continually singing praises to some bipolar, spooky, incompetent, father-figure who doesn't give a shit, I'll know I've arrived in Hell. Until then, I'll believe that it's halfway between Phoenix and Yuma.

7. Only those who believe in hell are at risk of going.
The lowest circle is reserved for those that use the fear of hell to control others.

On the other hand, some of the Fundamentalists have a heaven where the chief pleasure is watching the damned in hell. They can ONLY be happy watching their loved ones be tortured.

9. Can't say I do, can't say I ever did.
Even as a child, the idea of being punished forever seemed unjust.

11. Vast majority of all Americans - obviously a greater ratio of Xians.

Just remember that when our resident theologians, either real or wannabe, pretend that it's a fringe fundamentalist position not in keeping with mainstream Christianity.

73% of Protestants and 60% of Catholics in the US believe in a literal Hell.

12. Between 19% and 32% of the British depending on which survey you accept
Edited on Wed Aug-17-11 09:31 AM by LeftishBrit
British religion surveys can give rather contradictory results, depending on exactly how you ask the questions and the exact nature of the sample. Recent polls on how many British people believe in God have given figures ranging from 35 to 60%. 71% say they're Christians, which means that there are a fair few British nominal Christians who don't believe in God. In complete contrast to certain American communities, regular church attendance is quite rare here: the highest estimate of the proportion who attend church every Sunday is 12%.

Some years ago, during the John Major government, we had an awful and very incompetent Tory Education Secretary called John Patten. I am ashamed to say that he was my MP, but definitely not with my vote! At one point he wrote an article, in which he said that the decline in the belief in Hell had made people less afraid of the consequences of bad behaviour, and this was contributing to school indiscipline and juvenile delinquency. I remember muttering at the time: 'Have John Patten as your Education Secretary, and you too can believe in Hell!'

13. I wish there was a hell for some of the people I see...
But the truth is that Hell is a fictional creation used by elites to scare and control people.
