Catholic archbishop warns youth that mainstream media is not reliable source of religious news
According to Charles Chaput, the former Catholic Archbishop of Denver and incoming Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, the the news outlets CNN, MSNBC,and New York Times do not "provide trustworthy information about religious faith"

Archbishop Charles Chaput made this observation while delivering an address on religious freedom to about 10,000 pilgrims in Madrid University, on Wednesday, at the Catholic World Youth Day ongoing in Spain.

According to the Archbishop Chaput: In the United States, our battles over abortion, family life, same-sex marriage, and other sensitive issues have led to ferocious public smears and legal threats not only against Catholics, but also against Mormons, evangelicals, and other religious believers…the mass media tend to cover these disputed issues with a combination of ignorance, laziness, and bias against traditional Christian belief…We make a very serious mistake if we rely on media like the New York Times, Newsweek, CNN, or MSNBC for reliable news about religion. These news media simply don’t provide trustworthy information about religious faith …These are secular operations focused on making a profit…They have very little sympathy for the Catholic faith, and quite a lot of aggressive skepticism toward any religious community that claims to preach and teach God’s truth.

Oh, the irony! I guess I have to respect when a person just want to go full-on hypocrite and can say things like this with a straight face.

3. Grandly Dumb Party
Actually, The Archbishop is correct. The media coddles religious groups far too much, from child sexual abusers in the Catholic church to the ravings of morons like Perry and Bachmann, not able to see the reason and logic behind evolution, etc. A real media would measure the rainfall before Perry's rain dance prayerfest, with the lack of rain afterwards. Instead, they ignore it.

The archbishop should be grateful that the media is not more critical of asshole religions like his. It should be, if it were doing its job.

8. So,
they've tried blaming the victims, and that backfired. They refuse to allow the blame to fall on themselves, so they must now find someone else: Anyone who talks about them negatively.

Sounds familiar...

9. It is the old style Hierarchy mentality that following is good
and Chaput represents the strict obedience way that you always have to follow Rome 100% or you are not Catholic. :puke: Besides the local diocese newspapers (which most youth do not read), they have other outlets like (ir)Relevant Radio, which is fundie radio with a Catholic twist (95% abortion and gay marriage). They want to control the message to the youth , if you do not follow the message, the youth will stray from direct control from Rome. Rome is the only approved source to that Catholic subgroup.

He is also using this platform in Spain to set himself up for a future transfer to Rome, as being in Philly he is all but guaranteed a promotion to Cardinal in the near future. Instead of Philly, he wants some high post in Rome with lots of fancy trappings.
