Creationism and politics
And why evolution is such a tough nut to crack...

Insert any of the three major revelatory religions here...and one of the dogmas is that humans were especially created, exist above nature and chiefly are not part of it.

Now this is a cute one...but politically it is dangerous. Realize that this world view also implies that god will never let humanity go extinct. Why creationists and climactic change deniers are indeed connected.

I make fun of these people, but realize they are also dangerous.

1. And there's the rub...
I had this inkling when I was 14 or 15 back in the 1980s and now it is a full blown terror. How do you compromise with people who are chosen by god? They have no reason to compromise if you are simply wrong.

Fast forward 30 years and BOOM. Now we have our own facts, our own media, our own mega church to assure us we CANNOT be wrong. Again, why would someone like that compromise?

Add to that 30 years of Randroid double-talk and free market fairytales that essentially say if you are poor, it is your own fault, add in the fact that poverty based on structural inequality is now OPENLY cited as cultural superiority (Katrina anyone?), add in the economic shock doctrine as motive and profit center. Why would they compromise?

If ignorance ever had a perfect storm, I feel like I'm living through it.

2. Well the first problem is being able to discuss this
as politics, which we can't. I will now limit these posts to my own blog. Useless to try to speak of how politics and religion intersect in this place.

3. Allz I knowz is I ain't descended from no ape.
Now where's that luggage?

Actually, the harder problem than convincing people we evolved from apes is making them realize that we ARE apes.

This notion of humans being special fits in well with American Exceptionalism.

4. Right
Because imagining we were formed from a lump of dirt is somehow more appealing.

5. Half of us were.
The other half was formed from a leftover bit from that dirt.
