Progressive Christians stand up for excluded clergy and unity at Mayor Bloomberg's 9/11 commemoratio

Conservative Christian religious leaders have been decrying the decision of Mayor Bloomberg to exclude clergy and religion itself at the 9/11 commemoration event; yesterday, progressive Christians joined them, saying that not only should clergy be represented, but they are also taking aim at prominent conservatives who have criticized Bloomberg in the last few days, saying that conservatives ought not to be provoking division but encouraging unity at the commemoration. The progressive Christian group includes Jim Wallis, who heads the evangelical social justice group Sojourners; the Rev. Floyd Flake, a prominent New York pastor and former Democratic congressman; and Geoff Tunnicliffe, who heads the World Evangelical Alliance. They are planning a press conference at Ground Zero on Friday to stress “religion should not be excluded from 9/11 remembrances” but to also “urge unity, not division, on 9/11,” according to a Tuesday press release.

We see it even here on DU, sadly. Liberal believers who are quicker to stand up for conservative, even fundamentalist believers, than they are for the non-religious. Especially the vocal non-religious.
