Education vs. Indoctrination — Overt Christian proselytizing event at SC public middle school.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) contends that the New Heights Middle School in Jefferson, South Carolina, committed a serious violation of the Constitution by holding an in-school assembly featuring B-SHOC, who is a Christian rapper, and an evangelist named Christian Chapman. B-SHOC filmed the September 1 event, which the ACLU has made available on YouTube (see the video embedded at the end of this article).

The video begins with a smiling B-SHOC who expresses his gratitude to Bridging the Gap Ministries for arranging the event:

Because of this, people in public schools are going to get to know who Jesus Christ is, and that is what I am excited about.

In the next scene, evangelist Christian Chapman is seen preaching at the students who are assembled in the school gym. "A relationship with Jesus is what you need more than anything else," he tells the students. The young men and women are then lined up and their information is taken so that they are sure to be "plugged into a church."

I guess this school has plenty of money to spend defending against lawsuits...and I guess the principal thinks it will be easy to find another job.

1. I had to put up with this crap in high school.
One day, the principal ordered us all into the auditorium. There was a cover band on stage, and they whipped into some Van Halen songs. Then the lead singer sang Battle Hymn of the Republic, commenting how God was on the side of the (Union) soldiers (he told this to a bunch of Confederate descendants in our school in Mississippi). And if that wasn't stupid enough, he launched into his spiel about how his mission was to duplicate the soldiers' holy crusade, by recruiting us to the Lord.

Yeah, ok Van Halen ripoff dudes.

3. Ugh
Because of this, people in public schools are going to get to know who Jesus Christ is, and that is what I am excited about.....The young men and women are then lined up and their information is taken so that they are sure to be "plugged into a church."

Imagine the collective screeches if some group went in there to teach the kids about Allah or Buddha, then took their information to be sure they were "plugged into" a mosque or temple. But they have no qualms about indoctrinating children, without their parents knowledge or permission, into Christianity.

4. "...get to know who Jesus Christ is..."

What a hoot! I grew up in South Carolina. There cannot possibly be one person in that entire state who doesn't already know who Jesus is.

I've never understood that weird Xian obsession - that there must be vast numbers of people who don't know the first thing about Jesus and need to be schooled.

It's just bizarre. Especially in the Deep South, where you can hear about Jesus 24/7/365 if you're so inclined.

6. Just knowing Jesus isn't enough for these people, however
You must be part of the machine.

8. One of my goals in life
is to go an entire 24 hours without hearing a single word about Jesus. I don't know how I'm going to accomplish that yet.

11. Even if you aren't so inclined you're going to hear it anyway.
It's that or "How dare you oppress me by telling me you don't want to hear about my deity!?"

7. They gave out Gideon Bibles when I was in school - I hollowed mine out and stored drugs in it
It housed the very first pot I ever possessed. Did a fine job of it.

Van Halen cover band, huh? I wonder what would have happened if a substantial portion of the assembly, male and female, had showed them their tits. I bet that would put an end to these assemblies in a hurry.

Sorry, but if they're going to fuck around with metal and rap, they'd better be prepared to walk the walk.

10. We had James Robison, TV preacher, preaching at us.
In school assemblies. He got around it by never mentioning Jesus.
He just talked about 'the best friend you'll ever have'.

Assholes. Now he's a nationwide TV asshole.

13. Large parts of the South are pretty much petty theocracies.
They ignore the law and get away with it.

14. And the petty stuff does get by, but they get bold and try bigger things...
that get them unwanted attention, and lawsuits...
