Preachers confront 'last taboo': Condemning greed amid Great Recession

By John Blake, CNN

October 1st, 2011

(CNN) – Bishop Harry Jackson is a former college middle linebacker who can still hit hard.

He once described same-sex marriage as a satanic plot to destroy the family, called on Republicans to get “political Viagra” and said African-Americans needed to abandon what he called the Gospel of Victimization.

Jackson is not shy about stirring up controversy, but he stops short when it comes to preaching about greed. The Maryland bishop said he encourages his congregation to get through the Great Recession by saving and sharing. But he doesn’t want to alienate well-off members by talking about what’s behind the nation’s economic woes.

"I've got to watch it," said Jackson, pastor at Hope Christian Church in Beltsville, Maryland. "I could get into some big teaching on greed, but the reality is that a lot of that teaching may wind up creating anti-economic-growth and anti-capitalism concepts (in people’s minds). ... I always talk about personal responsibility so we don't get into the blame game."

1. Nope....never wondered at all....
Either they are greedy bastards themselves-covers pretty much all of the televangelist crowd, I think-or like the article says, they're too afraid to piss off the wealthy among their own flock.

It's all about the bejamins.

2. ??
The 7 Deadly Sins, also known as the Capital Vices or Cardinal Sins, is a classification of objectionable vices that have been used since early Christian times to educate and instruct followers concerning fallen humanity's tendency to sin. The currently recognized version of the list is usually given as wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony.

Wall Street and the 1% are guilty of all of these.

4. I'll say gay people are part of a satanic plot...
but I don't want to piss off them rich folks.

If there was a satanic plot (and the theological ideology behind such a ridiculous notion is convoluted to the point of absurdity), which is the more effective satanic plot, gay folks wanting to get married, or the incentive of greed mixed with near-absolute power of the rich in the banking and military industries leading to massive unemployment, poverty, and endless war around the world?

Talk about a satanic plot!

6. I'd call Jackson a horse's ass
But that would be insulting to horse's asses.

I supposed Mr. Jackson couldn't find this part of Matthew chapter 7 if you drew him a goddamn diagram;

Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. (Matt 7:15-16)

7. They do not preach about greed because they hate the faith they
claim. Like the President, they only mention their God stuff when they preach about gay people, never in regard to the major teachings of the one they cream over on the cross.
They are blasphemers by the standard of their messiah, and by mine, they are liars, hypocrites and terrible neighbors.
And of course the 'faith community' as whole never calls them out for the hypocrisy, because they do the same thing.

8. Never?
Then I must have imagined all the sermons I've heard in my life that condemn greed.

10. Many never
Many people never shave their legs. For example, many men never shave their legs. Women who recall shaving their legs are not imagining things. They're simply not members of a particular collection of people that does have many members.

Which means some do.

9. many can't; the prosperitygospel baloney's gotten pretty thick 'round here
in Houston metro. Even southern baptisty types are working that angle. Some Catholics parishes, as well...

It's epidemic.

Someone I otherwise respect told me last week that the hand wounds from the crucifiction caused Jesus to shed his blood specifically so we could have all the money we want ... if we meet certain conditions...

13. The "prosperity gospel
is a cruel perversion of Christian faith. You certainly don't find it in Jesus.
Many of us do think and talk and preach about greed. It is a commonly addressed subject.

18. Creflo Dollar often preaches about greed!
He's all for it:

Dollar is known for his controversial teachings of Prosperity theology. He has been criticized for his lavish lifestyle as he owns two Rolls-Royces, a private jet, a million dollar home in Atlanta, and a 2.5 million dollar home in Manhattan.

Dollar has refused to disclose his salary and Creflo Dollar Ministries received a grade of "F" for financial transparency by the organization MinistryWatch.

Dollar was subpoenaed during divorce proceedings between heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield and Holyfield's second wife, Janice Itson, after Itson alleged that Holyfield had donated $7 million to Dollar's ministry just before he filed for divorce. Dollar refused to yield his financial records, but avoided contempt of court charges when the divorce was settled out of court.

19. Joel Osteen receives over $10,000 a DAY in the mail.
I know someone who used to open his mail at his bank.
There were heart breaking letters asking for help, often needing psychological counseling, and over $10,000 a day in donations.

I have not seen Joel Osteen set up any charities or donate a crying dime for anyone's needs other than his and his wife's needs.

:wtf:
