Wow, God personally told Herman Cain to run for president.
Well, what happened was, Herman didn't actually want to run, he just didn't have any interest in it. Like Herman said "he resisted like Moses did after being called by God to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt. Matter of fact, Herman told God "You've got the wrong person. You can't be talking about me". However, through subsequent conversations with God, Herman came to slowly realize that God might be right after all... so he finally agreed to run.

2. Can anyone prove him wrong?
We need to seriously consider the possibility he may be right.

At least, that's what some people say when they accuse atheists of being too critical of religion.

Bachmann and Perry also were told by God to run for president.

Maybe God is just fuckin with all of them.

10. Doesn't this go against the spirit of the 1st Commandment?
Seems like the vanity of saying you were called by God to run ought to be a huge concern for Christians.

13. And if we accept any even vaguely typical concept of God, he may indeed have done so
The Bible is replete with stories of direct communication with mortals. The histories of all major Christian sects have their own examples. Even the most deist-in-disguise sophisticated theologies stop short of denying God the power to speak to humans, while they do shuffle their feet and adopt dithering excuses that he probably doesn't feel the need much these days. Maybe Cain is special ebnough and the stakes high enough that the Almighty has cleared his divine throat and uttered a few celerstial words for the first time in a few centuries? Who are we to say Nay, this Cain is No True Interlocutor with the Big Cheese himself?

22. :P

Now Herb was tending the flock of Theisen, his father-in-law, the priest of Pillsbury, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Cox, the mountain of Fox. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a large pizza. Herb saw that though the pizza was on fire it did not burn up. So Herb thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the pizza does not burn up.”

21. It's really fine with me if a candidate tells us he believes himself divinely ordered to run.
on my view, it's actually useful information about the candidate's thought processes

to date, such information has always contributed to my crossing the candidate off my list of people to vote for, on the grounds of megalomania compounded by a probably inadequate understanding of separation of church and state

25. There's a wonderful, gender-neutral pronoun you can always use.
It isn't best when using multiple hypothetical people, but "they" works wonders.

"It's really fine with me if a candidate tells us they believe themselves divinely ordered to run."

Then you don't have to worry about making a choice between sexist language and convenience.

26. Normally when people say they're hearing voices
and doing what the voices tell them, we medicate them or lock them up. Unless the call the voice "god", in which case we think it's wonderful and we let them run for the most influential job in the world.

Why is that?

28. Religion allows people to do by the billions what only the insane do in private.
For example, "If you wake up tomorrow morning thinking that by saying a few Latin words over your pancakes is going to turn into the body of Elvis Presley, you've lost your mind. But if you think, more or less, the same thing about a cracker and the body of Jesus, you're just a Catholic."

29. If a person says god spoke to them
We're supposed to smile indulgently and consider him blessed. If a person adds "through my hair dryer" he's suddenly insane. Why does the hair dryer suddenly change so much?

31. Update: at last nights republican presidential primary debate
Michele Bachmann pointed out that Herman Cain's 9 9 9 tax scheme turned upside down actually reads 666 which is the traditional sign of the Beast. Michele Bachmann warned that electing Herman Cain very well could bring about Armageddon, which is the conflict between good and evil in the Christian "end times" theology. Herman Cain pointed out that Michele Bachmann only got a "sensation" that God wanted her to run for the Presidency, while he actually had conversations with God, he didn't elaborate further on his point however.
