Atheists Scare American Cancer Society

"The American Cancer Society turned down a half a million dollar donation from a secular group (atheists, agnostics, etc.) known as the Foundation Beyond Belief. Ana Kasparian and Jayar Jackson discuss on The Young Turks."

Half a million dollars.............

Listen to the comments from the Christians, the ACS probably lost more money from Christians for turning this down.

5. And if that were true, it would speak VOLUMES about how the majority religious in this country
view the atheist minority.

2. I'm sure there are plenty of other organizations
that would be pleased to have that money. Apparently the ACS doesn't need our tainted, godless money, but others do.

6. Absolutely ridiculous to turn down anyone's money. Cancer plays
no favorites. And it shows that atheist and secular orgs. and groups can and do contribute in a very positive way to society. This transcends anything religious.

8. You would think they would want atheists' money more than money from
Some types of Fundie Christians.

After all, some Christians think that praying to God will cure their cancer, so why would they need to worry about the American Cancer Society?

Whereas most atheists have a more scientific view.

10. the american cancer society responds
Essentially, they're saying that they didn't turn down the money. They welcomed the donation. They just didn't want to recognize an atheist group for raising it.

13. Prime example of what is now a societal norm in the USA, recognize the
charity of religious groups and individuals, and recognize their religious affiliations, but refuse to treat others the same?

Where have I heard THAT theme song before???

11. Had the same issue (trust me in microcosm) with a local opera company a few years back
Like most such orgs they publish lists of donors above the trivial level. Many such donors choose to be anonymous or to represent organizations as the donor. A church group or two is always on the list.

They refused to recognize "anonymous atheist" or the name of an atheist group for my donation. Since I thought at the time, and still do, that atheists should be as ready as believers to associate their charity with their opinion on religion (in the case of atheists, more to dispel a persistent myth than to imply causation), I withheld the donation.

12. Interesting example of bias! I'm sure NOT all donors to the arts are
heavily religious people. I would imagine there's a number of atheists who support the arts, their community, and never put "Atheist" out there, (not that one shouldn't). If "Catholic Charities" or United Jewish Appeal, etc. gives money, we know right up front what their religion is, but not to have a religion, and want to be recognized as such in one's giving...seems to threaten lots of fund raiser people.
