LAKEWOOD — Police shut down a residents meeting at an age-restricted community off Lake Carasaljo when a “tumultuous elderly crowd” began feuding over religious use of the clubhouse in the secular 376-unit complex, according to authorities.
Four police officers and an ambulance were dispatched to the clubhouse of A County Place off South Lake Drive at 6:18 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6 for crowd control, said Capt. Greg Meyer of the township police.
The residential meeting was called for Thursday night when it was learned the clubhouse would be used for a religious service for Yom Kippur, said Walter McCloskey, 81, a Board of Trustee member for the complex. This was not a meeting of the board but of concerned residents, he said.
“The meeting got out of hand with yelling and shouting. Verbiage was exchanged” between Jewish and non-Jewish residents, Meyer said.
