US Conference of Catholic Bishops: Satan Makes People Gay
Daniel Avila of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage says that it may be that gay people are born that way — but only because Satan interfered in the womb. In The Pilot, the official publication of the Boston Diocese, he replaces his ignorance with Catholic doctrine.

The best natural evidence of what God causes and wants for us is our genetic code. Science has isolated certain genetic combinations that are typical to human creation and development. The most basic and the first genetic expression is that which occurs at our conception, when at the same time our individual human life begins our sexual identity as male or female begins. That which is genetically encoded, for believers, points to a codifier, and communicates through its design the codifier’s intent. Interpreting from a spiritual perspective the genetic code which supplies our sexual difference, we have to conclude that God wants us to be male or female.

--snip--
More from the Bishops:

Catholics do not have the luxury of being materialists. We look for ultimate explanations that transcend the strictly physical world and that stretch beyond our limited ability to mold and reshape reality as we know it. Disruptive imbalances in nature that thwart encoded processes point to supernatural actors who, unlike God, do not have the good of persons at heart. :wtf: In other words, the scientific evidence of how same-sex attraction most likely may be created provides a credible basis for a spiritual explanation that indicts the devil.:wow: Any time natural disasters occur, we as people of faith look back to Scripture’s account of those angels who rebelled and fell from grace. In their anger against God, these malcontents prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. They continue to do all they can to mar, distort and destroy God’s handiwork.

Therefore, whenever natural causes disturb otherwise typical biological development, leading to the personally unchosen beginnings of same-sex attraction, the ultimate responsibility, on a theological level, is and should be imputed to the evil one, not God. Applying this aspect of Catholic belief to interpret the scientific data makes more sense because it does not place God in the awkward position of blessing two mutually incompatible realities — sexual difference and same-sex attraction.

Tell me again why ANYONE supports this organization by filling the pews and the coffers...

2. Catholic Archdiocese Retracts "Gays Are From Satan" Newspaper Story
The Archdiocese of Boston has retracted its column claiming that gay people are created by Satan. (On Monday that column was excerpted here on JMG.) The article was written by David Avila, the policy advisor for the US Conference of Catholic Bishops' Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage.

The 182-year-old newspaper withdrew the column from its website on Wednesday, saying it had failed to recognize the "theological error" before publication. It posted an apology from Avila saying the column didn't represent the position of the Conference of Catholic Bishops, whose stated purpose is to "promote the greater good which the Church offers humankind," and wasn't authorized for publication. Avila said he deeply apologized for the "hurt and confusion" the column caused. Archdiocesan officials said Avila's apology would appear in the issue of The Pilot to be published this week, The Boston Globe reported. The Boston archdiocese, the bishops' group and Avila were involved in communications leading to the decision to retract the column, said archdiocese spokesman Terrence Donilon, who called Avila "passionate about his faith and passionate about his church."

8. The author got slapped down by the bishops and issued a retraction.
They still are one man/one woman marriage teachers but:

Editor's Note: Daniel Avila issued the following "Retraction/Apology" Nov. 2 in regard to his opinion piece "Some fundamental questions on same-sex attraction" which was published in our Oct. 28 edition. In addition to echoing Mr. Avila's statement of regret, The Pilot also wishes to apologize for having failed to recognize the theological error in the column before publication. The Pilot has removed the column 'Some fundamental questions on same-sex attraction'from its Website.

Retraction/Apology from Daniel Avila

"Statements made in my column, 'Some fundamental questions on same-sex attraction' of October 28, do not represent the position of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the column was not authorized for publication as is required policy for staff of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The teaching of Sacred Scripture and of the Catechism of the Catholic Church make it clear that all persons are created in the image and likeness of God and have inviolable dignity. Likewise, the Church proclaims the sanctity of marriage as the permanent, faithful, fruitful union of one man and one woman. The Church opposes, as I do too, all unjust discrimination and the violence against persons that unjust discrimination inspires. I deeply apologize for the hurt and confusion that this column has caused."

13. Church official apologizes for piece suggesting same-sex attraction is devil’s work
By Brian MacQuarrie, Martin Finucane and and Michael Levenson, Globe Staff

A former top Catholic official in Massachusetts apologized today for an opinion piece he wrote in the Boston archdiocese’s official newspaper ...

The commentary by Daniel Avila, published in Friday’s issue of The Pilot, was deleted from the newspaper’s website late this afternoon. Avila’s apology will appear in the issue to be published this week, archdiocesan officials said ...

Avila, who formerly worked as associate director for policy and research at the Massachusetts Catholic Conference, said his piece did not represent the official position of the Catholic bishops and that the column was not authorized for publication by the conference as it was supposed to be ...

“As we absorbed what was in the paper, we said, ‘Whoa, that’s a problem,’ ” Donilon said of the reaction of archdiocesan officials. “That’s not the position of the church or the archdiocese.” ...

16. Could be. Then, again, claims upthread seem to be incorrect on a number of details:
it wasn't USCCB that wrote this, it was Avila, and he's not a member of USCCB, merely an advisor

IIRC, the Catholic hierarchy doesn't usually very backtrack quickly on their official stands

and the link I posted from the Globe suggests the publisher is responsible for day-to-day editorial decisions

so it's entirely credible that Avila over-stepped his bounds and sent an unapproved piece to the paper that didn't at all reflect USCCB views and that the USCCB was rather surprised to read what he had written

20. So...
Just to reiterate, Avila was "merely an advisor" and this "unapproved piece... didn't at all reflect USCCB views."

23. What a load of crap
It's a way of evading personal responsibility.

I didn't mean to rape little Jimmy, the DEVIL made me do it.

I didn't mean to rob the bank, it was the DEVIL.

etc.

I think anyone who actually believes in this stuff has to either be willingly stupid, a con man, or certifiably insane.

24. Hey catholic bishops .......... why did god create the devil in the first place??
if he/she did not create the devil, where did the devil come from.
Sounds like the devil has as much power as god
So it stands to reason that the devil is a god

25. Further follow-up, even Avila regrets what he did.

"Ah…...Apparently Daniel Avila has decided that it was not a good idea to claim that homosexuality was the work of Satan. The Pilot and Daniel Avila have both issued statements retracting the publication of a column by Avila, who calls himself the Bishop’s homophobic go-to-guy, claiming that they were mistaken in publishing it. The Boston archdiocese says that it failed to recognize the ‘theological error’ behind the article."

...

"While the retraction is nice, let us be honest here, the fact that this man continues to push his lies is unacceptable. He should remember that God puts bearing false witness and lying far above homosexuality on the list of sins, and yet, he and his Church are more than willing to push their lies."

27. things can't be stricken from the record
it's an OLD tactic, say what you mean and what you want to be heard, then take it and down and apologize. Oops, Fox News ticker misspelled Obama as Osama again, lol shucks, Oops, my lawyer basically accused the other guy of a cover up with no evidence and it got "stricken" the jury heard it, it's in their heads now, (that last one wasn't a real example) that's what they believe it's who they are, it's in their hearts, they are hateful, despicable people.
