The sex scandal looming over Penn State University has led the Westboro Baptist Church to announce plans for a November 12, 2011 protest at Penn State. Shirley Phelps-Roper, commenting specifically for this article, calls Joe Paterno “a man who failed in his duty” and a “cover-up pope” whom many look to as a god.
Westboro Baptist Church, Phelps-Roper says, will be protesting with the central message of “fear God and obey or you will be going to Hell like Joe Paterno.” Phelps-Roper calls the sex scandal controversy “a horrible tale of rape and cover-up that hangs like a big albatross around the neck of Pennsylvania.”
Recently, students rioted in the streets in support of Joe Paterno/were angry because Paterno was fired. Phelps-Roper says that these students have “turned Joe Paterno into a 'god with a small g' while 'God with a big g' has cast down their idols and false gods. People are screaming in violence and rebellion just like in Jeremiah 5 in which people assembled like troops to a whore's house.”
Students from Penn State Atheist/Agnostic Association and the LGBTA Alliance at Penn State will be organizing for a silent counter-protest against the Westboro Baptist Church. Phelps-Roper, responding to this, said, “There are only two demographics: those who obey god and those who do not. They are all one group with brains tethered to Satan. They are all Satan's children. Breaking people up into groups is confusion. They will be fighting with each other unable to decide what to do because Satan is confusing them. Satan loves confusion.”
