Religious leaders announce plans to "bear witness" as police prepare to evict Occupy Portland

By Bryan Denson, The Oregonian

A coalition of religious leaders announced plans this afternoon to spend all night Saturday into Sunday to "bear witness" to the planned police eviction of Occupy Portland campers in downtown parks.

"We need to make sure what happened in Oakland does not happen in Portland," said the Rev. Chuck Currie, of the United Church of Christ, in Portland, at a news conference outside City Hall.

Demonstrators and police clashed in Oakland, Calif., last week, leaving the city with shattered windows and fires in the streets. Protesters at other demonstrations across the nation condemned the violence.

As many as 20 interfaith leaders plan to be on hand to observe the planned eviction of Portland's occupiers, which city officials set for 12:01 a.m. Sunday, according to Currie, who described the occupation movement as "the kind of protest that Martin Luther King would be proud of."

5. i'm sure the FFRF is on the scene monitoring it quietly.
Just in case someone says a prayer while the police attack.

But they are one private party suing another. A religious organization involving itself in the relationship between government and the citizenry is a really bad idea. The fact that advertising it for self promotion is generally accepted is another indication of the civic and spiritual malaise that afflicts this country.

6. "Demonstrators and police clashed in Oakland, Calif."
:wtf:

It should read: Police attacked peaceful demonstrators with steel-cored 'rubber bullets', causing multiple serious injuries.
