Atheist "Adopt a Street" signs vandalized
The Western North Carolina Atheists decided to "Adopt a Street", whereby they'd clean up a street in their area. The program erects signs designating which group is responsible for a particular street. It's no surprise that the atheists' signs were promptly vandalized.

Just as I finished uploading the latest episode of the podcast, I received a call from Asheville GreenWorks informing me that our WNC Atheists sign for Adopt-a-Street had been vandalized. To be honest, I'm more surprised that it lasted three months unscathed.

I was also informed that the city has received threatening phone calls demanding that our signs be taken down.

I'm happy to report that Asheville GreenWorks and the City of Asheville are firmly on our side. They have filed a police report about the vandalism, and they will be replacing the sign as soon as the new one is printed.

<snip>

It's a shame that vandals have to waste the time and money of GreenWorks, who put a tremendous amount of effort toward keeping this city looking beautiful.

<snip>

:wtf:

When atheist billboards are vandalized the (lame) excuse typically provided is that they're "offensive" to the religious beliefs of others. What is the excuse for the vandalism of these signs? These are signs indicating that a group is working to beautify the area. What's the deal? Is the mere existence of atheists so offensive that it causes certain people to react this way? Why are they compelled to wipe out any evidence they see of our presence?

27. Symbolically "scratching out" the atheists?
You just know this is the kind of person who gets off fantasizing about atheists being barbecued for eternity.

It's much nicer that way. His over-the-top posts rarely get deleted, so there's not much use in alerting.

13. Why are atheist signs allowed on public property anyway?
Edited on Thu Nov-17-11 01:01 AM by humblebum
I believe that's a violation of separation of C&S. After all, atheism has been declared a religion when it comes to rights under the first amendment. Freedom from Religion Foundation needs to be alerted.

14. that would be the rational approach, not the religious way
appealing to the law, and understanding founding documents would be too close to science and book lernin. Best just to stick to the violent methods perscribed in our ancient texts of conduct. Those Atheists are just lucky they weren't actually AROUND, or good old god fearin folk that defaced the sign would have thrown rocks at them until they were dead.
