Evangelicals’ Collapsing Sexual Mores

I’m coming a bit late to this piece, but the October 2011 issue of Relevant magazine contains a must-read article for those who see the need for a rather profound cultural course correction. It turns out that 80 percent of unmarried evangelicals (18 to 29) are sexually active. Yes, 80 percent. For all unmarried young adults the total is 88 percent. Oh, and even as 80 percent of young unmarried evangelicals are sexually active, 76 percent of evangelicals still believe sex outside of marriage is wrong. Even worse, 65 percent of women who abort their children identify as Catholic or Protestant Christian — that’s 650,000 Christian abortions per year.

I love the NR article which claims that the facts mean we need a massive change in our culture. Hey, doofus, society is what it is. How about a massive change in the victorian, bizarre, unnatural and evil teachings of the church which require abstinence, yet look the other way when ministers and priests get their rocks off on innocent little boys and girls? Or am I asking too much?

By your way of thinking, our culture would have to become more accepting of LGTB people, fat people and people who occasionally smoke a blunt to kill their pain or to just feel better.

As a culture, we would have too much time on our hands if we no longer tried to force or legislate this victorian "proper" behavior in our society.

marriage is wrong, but that doesn't mean that they don't indulge in it.

20 years ago I was a member of a touring rock band. It was well known on the college circuit that if you went to a state school the after concert, er, activities were good, bu if you truly wanted to get your freak on you played the religious colleges or near to them. Frank Zappa was right.

This exposes one of the perennial self-contradictions
of conservatism. here's a hint, evangelical assholes:
if you want single people to fuck less, then maaaayyybbbeeee
you shouldn't be so supportive of today's corporate capitalist
system which simply does not allow most 18-25
year olds to be financially capable of marrying and supporting
a family

Also, if you want to lament families not spending enough
time together, then mmmmaaaaaaayyyybbbeeee you need to not be so
supportive of the aforementioned system which requires
many people to work 70 hours a week?
