I am frightened. I worked on a Sunday and I understand there's this book
that is saying I ought to be killed for it!!!!

Please tell me that we don't have hate literature on our streets like this.

1. Only the Bible
But some folks tell me not to take it too literally...otherwise we would be stoning our neighbors on a daily basis.

7. Only the hypocrites.
The rest of us know that the Bible is a study text like any other historical book, not a how-to manual.;)

34. Hebrew bible says "seventh day of the week"
This is usually understood to be Saturday. Jesus is said to have risen on the first day--interpreted as Sunday.

Jews interpret the 24 hour Sabbath as being sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. And since the specifications about the Sabbath are in their book, I think they have the right to make the call.

So, Sunday is fine. Work your ass off. But Saturday...

4. That book has been amended somewhat...
...if you work for an organized sport, Wal-Mart, or any right-wing media outlet, it's downright Godly to work on Sunday.

6. I was living in South Carolina when the blue laws were still
in existance... I also saw the changes when they were amended and the churches were all up in arms when it happened..
The marque in front of one church read: It May Be Man's Law But It Is Not God's Law.

24. There are states and some localities that don't allow alcohol sales Sun.
When I was a child in Ohio, they roped off the alcohol on Sunday. Now alcohol can be sold on Sunday but people in the neighborhood have to vote on it.

30. Maybe
but I'm not holding my breath. I think you are forgetting that fundamentalists are willfully blind to logic and shun truth as a matter of principle. That is about as ignorant as one can get. However, insanity fades with time, so I also forsee such a future as you do.

16. From what I understand
And correct me if I am wrong. The Bible teaches that Jesus forgives all sins to the repentant........except one. He will forgive lying, cheating, stealing, raping, assault and murder, etc. But if you deny his existence you are damned forever.

Ok here is goes. Listen closely, I am about to make a statement here on the DU so hundreds can witness what I have to say.

**Jesus does not exist**

He's just one of several mythological pagan idols with the same exact story as most all the other mythological pagan idols.

It teaches that THIS is the way....That their ideas are so brand-spanking new...And would you look at that: THEY AREN'T.

25. It's blasphemy against the Holy Spirit that's called unforgivable.
I wish I could tell you for sure what that means, but I can't because I'm not certain. I personally suspect it may have something to do with complete rejection of the spirit of Love.

Fact is, your disbelief doesn't damn you according to most of the christians sects.

21. Yes indeed
There's a whole crap-load of stuff that book says people should be killed for. Unfortunately it's adherents use the Cafeteria Plan when applying it--they choose which things they want to apply to others, then ignore things they don't want to apply to themselves because they are too inconvenient. The book becomes a weapon in their hands.

26. What you didn't know? lol
That is the problem with the old testament. You get to die for stupid "shit". I love reading it. In exodus there is an order to be carried out that states; (paraphrased) If two men are fighting and the wife of one man should grab the "secrets" of the opponent than she shall be put to death. There are many descriptions of interesting problems and the solutions at the time. I can't remember where but another describes a scab or sore that grows on the walls of houses and the priest has to take a look and if it isn't gone in 3 weeks the house must be burned.

I guess it worked for them at the time but things aren't like that anymore so you are safe, no death for you this week. lol

31. I love a good stoning
I declare that you have sinned against the Lord, working on the blessed day of rest. You shall be condemned, stoning is your punishment. Now, go out there and get stoned. Hey, this religion thing ain't that bad. ;)

I tried to find bible passages about the sabbath and punishments for failing to observe. I found this little number
http://www.cgi.org/booklets/sabbath.cfm

Reading through the page I can only ponder why people are obsessed with religion. Got to get into heaven and live forever, a strong motivator. Strong enough to allow many to accept faith over reason.
