I'm actually at work today. I'm a teacher. And my Good Friday self-appointed task is to spend the day praying as I work with these little flower buds. I teach k-2 today and they are so dear.

be a Catholic to feel some kind of reverence for the day we celebrate the death of a man who, if everyone followed his teachings, could bring peace and justice to this planet. You wouldn't have to acknowledge him as the Son of God, just as a man who taught peace, love, tolerance, and justice.

10. Well in order to fit in with my

Lenten meat fast, it will have to be meatless. I hear Morningstar has a good meatless hotdog but I haven't tried it yet. Really, the best part of the hotdog is the saurkraut and relish.

When I was in boarding school we at sardines and tapioca on Good Friday. Not my favorite meal!

Mixed together? Ugh!
I was on boarding school but lived near and was able to spend Holy Thurday, Good Friday and Easter with family. I can't remember what we ate, probably the traditional Friday shrimp and okra gumbo (no file in my family), like that was some sort of sacrifice eating gumbo, red fish, flounder or speckled trout.

Now real sacrifice was when we move to Texas. I remember when I opened my first Friday brown bag lunch. I thought it had gone rotten. The kid next to me told me to shut up and eat my tuna sandwich like everyone else. Then I got home to fish sticks. This was a real shock to someone who was weaned to fresh gulf seafood. Oh my!

13. No, not together..

separate plates. And water. Lots of water. No ice. The nuns fasted completely. I liked the tapioca, though. I used to trade my sardines for my roommate's tapiocas. And we spent 12-3 in church. Which we liked becaue there were no classes. We sang plainsong and it was really beautiful to sing. The covent chapel was an amazing place..steeped in prayer for a hundred years.

15. And it always smelled of incence and beeswax

Do you remember anyone having trouble with incense in those days. We used it all the time so that when you openned the door to the church the air was infused with it. Now one swing of the thurible and the whole congregation is coughing and wheezing.

BTW. I know that the tapioca and sardines were not together, just my weird twisted mind at work.

16. The first time I smelled incense

I was 13, and having my period for the first time. We didn't use kneelers at the convent. I was on my knees for about 5 minutes and fainted dead away.

Lest anyone thing the nuns forced us to kneel without kneelers, they WERE available and we didn't have to kneel if we didn't want to. But it was like a feat of honor for us. But that incense..oh my.

Now I love the smell.

18. Sometimes our spring break

coincides with Holy Week, but not always and not this year. I was going to take a personal day but I'm running low on leave and my son is getting married in May. So here I am. Thing is, we serve home and private schools today and they aren't here! So go figure. I have three kids in the lab with me right now, but they're having fun.

I got done praying for them all in about five minutes!
