Should Christians refuse to take oaths of office, especially on the Bible?

Matthew 5:34-37

"But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. Simply let your 'yes' be 'yes', and your 'no,' 'no'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one"

Quakers, I believe Jehovah's Witnesses, and others.

Can't say the pledge of allegiance, or swear in court. That's why when you hear an oath administered in court they say, "Do you solemnly swear or affirm..."

Quakers, Amish, and Mennonites (or at least some of those). A good way of showing who actually pays attention to what Jesus said.

When I joined the Navy years ago they gave us the choice of "swear" or "affirm" for that very reason.

He affirmed instead. I don't remember which one it was though. Someone before the civil war. I will look it up and post again.

Just finished looking it up. It was Franklin Pierce. He refused to swear for religous reasons. The very reason stated in the original post, actually. He is the only president to have done so.
